Salman Rushdie, Hadi Matar and the art of grievance making: How Islamists find a steadfast ally in liberals

When Hadi Matar repeatedly stabbed Salman Rushdie in New York on 12 August 2022 — and whenever a Muslim settled in the West takes up a jihadi cause — one is invariably reminded of Feri, the protagonist of Foreigner, an Iranian novel written in 1978, when the Shah still ruled Tehran. VS Naipaul, in his book Among the Believers: An Islamic Journey, writes in detail about this book, which was believed to be the first novel in English by an Iranian author, Nahid Rachlin.

Feri is a 32-year-old Iranian woman living in Boston. She has studied in the United States, is married to an American university teacher, and works as a biologist in a research institute. She goes back to Tehran for a two-week holiday. Initially, she doesn’t like her stay in Iran; she falls ill and is taken to a local hospital. She is nervous about treatment in an Iranian hospital, but the doctor in charge reassures her. He claims he was trained in the US but left to work in Iran. At the hospital, she begins to reflect on her life in the US and question the relevance of her stay there. In America, she suddenly finds herself to be “a stranger, solitary in spite of husband and friends, always at a loss sexually and socially”. The doctor tells Feri that the pain in her stomach is due to an old ulcer, brought with her from the foreign land: “What you have is a Western disease.”

When Feri’s American husband arrives to take her back, she finds him to be a stranger. It is impossible for her to go back with someone so remote to the “American emptiness”. She doesn’t mind — or even care— losing her job. Feri resolves to stay back in Iran and do what the doctor does: Visit mosques and adopt puritan Islam. She feels she has never been so happy.

It’s an interesting phenomenon. When a person is poor, wretched, all he wants is food, house, and some basic dignity. He migrates to the better part of the world, gains livelihood. But by the time the next generation comes up, a sense of ‘rootlessness’ gains ground; then begins a renewed search for one’s identity, tracing the very roots his father or grandfather ignominiously left behind in Syria, Iran, Afghanistan or even in Pakistan. Ayatollah Khomeini and his ilk become his idols. And he aspires to be part of the Ummah!

Foreigner was written in 1978, a year before the cataclysmic Islamic revolution in Iran and almost a decade before the defeat of the erstwhile Soviet Union at the hands of the US-backed Mujahideen in Afghanistan. From today’s perspective, Nahid Rachlin’s novel would therefore look incomplete. For Islam before 1979 and Islam after these two momentous events are two different phenomena. By the late 1980s, the Islamists were unstoppable. The world was at their feet; at least they thought so, after giving the Americans a bloody nose in Iran and then defeating the Russians in Afghanistan. Aided and abetted by petrodollar, this saw the rise of an assertive and aggressive Islam; it no longer was just about going back to the roots. For, the initial bliss that Feri encountered in Iran after visiting mosques would have been followed by frustration and anger at the American world order. Feri and the doctor would have gone back to America — this time as Trojan Horses — with the objective of destroying it from within and without. Mosques, after all, are politically one the most active and volatile spaces in the Islamic world.

This may explain why 24-year-old Hadi Matar went to Lebanon in 2018 — in search of his identity — and then came back to the US with renewed anger and vengeance. If his mother, Silvana Fardos, is to be believed, her “outgoing son” turned into a moody and introvert person following a visit to see his Lebanese father. “I was expecting him to come back motivated, to complete school, to get his degree and a job. But instead he locked himself in the basement. He had changed a lot; he didn’t say anything to me or his sisters for months” she was quoted as saying by Daily Mail. “One time he argued with me, asking why I encouraged him to get an education instead of focusing on religion. He was angry that I did not introduce him to Islam from a young age,” she said.

Hadi Matar was angry with Salman Rushdie for “insulting” Islam. “I saw a lot of lectures. I don’t like people who are disingenuous like that”, he was quoted as saying. The fakeness of his rage, however, can be gauged from the fact that the act for which he tried to kill Rushdie had taken place much before he was born. But then, in Islam, nothing is forgotten or forgiven — at least that’s what Islamists believe. Thus, Rushdie had to be punished, and he was on that fateful August day.

In his book, Schmoozing with Terrorists, Aaron Klein interviewed terrorist leaders and suicide bombers to understand why they take such extreme steps. While our so-called liberal interpreters would come up with several root cause explanations — ranging from Israeli occupation of Palestine and the US’ eternal thirst of Arab oil to the Kashmir issue and Gujarat 2002 — to interpret the Islamist anger, Klein was told in no uncertain terms that these were never the primary reasons. As one of the recruited bombers told Klein, “The will to sacrifice myself for Allah is the first and most major reason. It is true that the Zionists are occupying our lands and that it is our religious duty to fight them, including through suicide attacks. The goal is not the killing of the Jews, but that this is the way to reach Allah…. Martyrs have special status in the next world and have bigger chances to watch Allah’s face and enjoy the magnificent pleasures he offers us.”

This may explain Hadi Matar’s temptation to kill Rushdie. But then that’s the distressing part of the story: To invent the root cause for the Islamist ire even when there is none! What’s even more unsettling, however, is the absolute cluelessness of the non-Islamic world, including India, to deal with the Islamist riddle. Brigitte Gabriel writes in her book, They Must Be Stopped: Why We Must Defeat Radical Islam and How We Can Do It, “The West is still seeking the answer to radical Islam’s three riddles: What can we do so that they will not hate us? So that they will stop attacking us? So that they will not want to destroy us? If we grant concessions, will radical Islam forgo the opportunity to kill us?”

She continues, “Radical Islam understands its adversary well. It knows that the West hungers for harmony, for resolution, for approval. It also understands our humanistic impulses — our tendency to employ reason and logic in the quest for solutions to thorny issues — and that we unwisely attribute those same impulses to our enemy. It also understands that we prefer to appease an intractable foe rather than to confront it — a weakness that radical Islam exploits without mercy.”

What Gabriel writes for the West stands true for India as well. The dominant Indian intelligentsia, which swears by liberalism, consistently advocates greater concession for radical Islam, citing historical grievances and injustices, little realising that similar concessions in the past only aroused their appetite for more.

The problem gets compounded by the ‘liberal’ propensity not to debate Islam and Islamism, for the fear of offending the faithful. Those few who dare to initiate a discussion are invariably abused and called names — from being termed racist and ethno-centrist to outright Islamophobic — primarily by mainstream liberals.

This explain why Barbie, “once a beacon of femininity and feminism in the West”, happily dons a hijab today, without much protest in the liberal circle, and Marks & Spencer sells hijabs for girls without any facing any feminist ire. “In Saudi Arabia, women are burning their niqabs. In Iran, women tie their hijabs on sticks and sway them silently, defiantly in the streets as they are arrested in droves,” Yasmine Mohammed writes in her book Unveiled: How Western Liberals Empower Radical Islam, “In the West, we put a Nike swoosh on hijabs.”

The Western liberals may have reasons to be apologetic, thanks to their oppressive and exploitative colonial past. But what about Indian liberals? They don’t even have that excuse. They belong to a country that has no colonial/imperial past and is historically a shining example of liberal, secular values, where people of all faiths flourished, and where every persecuted community found a refuge. They should have stood for Muslim women during the recent Karnataka hijab controversy. They should have openly debated and discussed the killing of a Hindu tailor in Rajasthan just for defending the view of a suspended BJP spokesperson. When they invoke Gujarat 2002, which they have every right to do, they should also talk about Kashmir 1990 and Delhi 1984 with same intensity and fervour.

India’s so-called liberals can take a cue from Dr Khaleel Mohammed, a professor at San Diego State University who is also an imam who studied at Muhammad bin Saud University in Riyadh (Sunni) and the Zeinabiyya in Damascus (Shia). In his ‘Foreword’ to Irshad Manji’s much controversial book, The Trouble With Islam Today, he writes matter of factly that he should hate Manji because “if Muslims listen to her, they will stop listening to people like me, an imam who spent years at a traditional Islamic university. She threatens my male authority and says things about Islam that I wish were not true… She is a lesbian, and my madrassa training has instilled, almost into my DNA, that Allah hates gays and lesbians.” Yet, the imam supports Manji, howsoever discomforting her views might be. “Irshad is telling the truth. And my God commands me to uphold the truth,” he says.

One hopes the liberals in India stand up and uphold the truth, too. It, however, seems to be big ask, given their dubious track record and mischievous doublespeak: For, they would largely support a ban on The Satanic Verses while opposing the pulping of Wendy Doniger’s overwhelmingly erotic interpretation of the sacred Hindu texts; they would stand in support of an illustrious Muslim painter as he drew nude paintings of Hindu goddesses, but maintained a stony silence when a Hindu made certain inconvenient comments regarding Islam citing their own sacred texts; they supported the Hindu Code Bill while resisting any attempt to reform Islamic practices. For all their liberal pretensions, they would support Article 370 in Kashmir and, worse, question the need for the Universal Civil Code in the country.

It’s time for those who swear by liberalism in India to learn from the American imam. If he can support the ‘much reviled’ Irshad Manji, it should not be too difficult for Indian liberals to stand up and be counted. But then the question is: Do they have the will and the appetite to do so? Given the current scenario in the country, this seems to be a difficult proposition.

Dumka girl's death: Sections of POCSO Act added in case, say police

New Delhi: Police on Thursday said that sections of POCSO Act have been added in the case involving a Class XII girl who died after she was set on fire in Jharkhand’s Dumka district.

Earlier, the victim’s age was mentioned as 19 years in her recorded statement by the police which was later corrected to 15 years, they added.

The Jharkhand Child Welfare Committee had asked for the addition of charges under the Protection of Children Against Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act in an FIR filed in the case.

The committee said that the girl was a minor as per the Class X board examination mark sheet and not an adult as claimed by the police.

“The Jharkhand Child Welfare Committee recommends the SP to add sections under POCSO Act in the matter. The Committee found out that the deceased was 15 years old and 19 as mentioned by Police in her recorded statement,” the Dumka Public Relations Office had said.

The Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act provides stringent punishment to those engaging in sexual crimes against children along with death penalty in cases of aggravated sexual assault.

Meanwhile, The National Commission for Women (NCW) on Wednesday sought a report from the Jharkhand director general of police on the death of the girl.

A two-member NCW team visited the family members of the deceased in Dumka.

“We have sought a report from the DGP. We came here to take a first-hand report of the incident,” NCW member Shalini Singh told reporters.

A team of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) is also scheduled to visit Dumka on September 4, officials said.

Cong president election: BJP picks at Cong, cautions Shashi Tharoor to ‘stop being around public toilets, avoid flights'

New Delhi: Minutes after reports stating Shashi Tharoor exploring the possibility of running for the post of Congress President started gaining momentum, BJP leader Amit Malviya cautioned the senior Congress leader and suggested him to learn lessons from history.

In a tweet, Malviya told Tharoor that if he is intending to run for Congress President’s post, he should “immediately stop being around public toilets and avoid flights, chartered planes or chopper, in particular.”

“He (Tharoor) must learn from the lessons history has to to offer,” the BJP leader told Tharoor, wishing him “Good luck!”

On Tuesday, reports, citing Tharoor's article for "free and fair election" for Congress President's post started doing rounds, with media asking the party Lok Sabha MP from Thiruvananthapuram whether he would be contesting the election in October.

"I have no comment to make. I accept what I have written in my article, which is that an election would be a good thing for the Congress party," Tharoor said, referring to his article in the Malayalam daily Mathrubhumi.

Reports state that Tharoor is "exploring the possibility" of contesting for Congress president but is yet to take a final call on it.

A report by news agency PTI quoted sources saying, "He has not made up his mind, but could take a call on it soon."

In his article in Mathrubhumi, Tharoor said the "the leadership vacuum at the top" had a damaging effect within the Congress.

He also said that the election of a "fresh president" will be the start towards the revitalisation the Congress badly needs.

On Sunday, Congress announced that the election for party president would be held on 17 October and the result will be declared on 19 October.

The notification for the Congress president election will be issued on 22 September. The filing of nomination would be between 24 and 30 September.

Tharoor, who is among the group of 23 leaders, wrote to Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi in 2020, seeking organisational reforms.

"Allowing members of the party drawn from the AICC and PCC delegates to determine who will lead the party from these key positions, would have helped legitimize the incoming set of leaders and give them a credible mandate to lead the party," he had said in a letter to Gandhi.

Explained: How India’s new naval ensign is an attempt to ‘shed its colonial past’

Friday, 2 September will be a momentous occasion for the Indian Navy for two reasons. The country’s first indigenous aircraft carrier Vikrant will be commissioned and the naval force will get a new ensign, which as the Prime Minister’s Office stated “would do “away with the colonial past… befitting the rich Indian maritime heritage”.

It has been reported that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will commission INS Vikrant at Cochin Shipyard Limited in Kochi and during the event, he will also “unveil the new Naval Ensign (Nishaan), doing away with the colonial past”.

We take a closer look at what a naval ensign means, what changes has the Indian Naval ensign seen and why India is choosing to change the ensign now.

What is a naval ensign?

Simply put, a naval ensign is the flag that is hoisted atop all naval installations, including naval warships, ground stations and naval air bases.

Each country’s navy has its own ensign; the US Navy’s ensign is the same as the national flag, but many other navies have distinctive naval ensigns which are “worn” by their war vessels.

India’s naval ensign

The Indian Navy draws its origin to the colonial period. According to the Indian Navy website, on 2 October 1934, the naval service was renamed Royal Indian Navy with its headquarters at Bombay (now Mumbai).

When India became a Republic in 1950, the prefix ‘Royal’ was dropped and it was rechristened as the Indian Navy.

The current ensign of the Indian Navy is a white flag with horizontal and vertical red stripes, symbolising the Cross of Saint George, with the emblem of India superimposed on the intersection. The tricolour is placed in the upper canton next to the staff.

However, this has not always been the case. As per reported information, this is the fourth time since 1950 that the Naval Ensign would undergo a change.

When Indian became a Republic in 1950, the naval ensign was ‘indianised’. It went from being the red Cross of St. George on a white background with the Union Jack of the United Kingdom on the top left corner to the red Cross of St. George with the Union flag being replaced with the tricolour.

However, this wasn’t the only change that the ensign underwent. In 2001, the Indian Navy decided to change the ensign replacing the Cross of St. George with the naval badge, an anchor within a frame surmounted by the state emblem, the Sarnath Lion Capital.

This change had come after there had been demands to change the ensign. Interestingly, the idea to change the ensign came from Vice Admiral Vivian Barboza in the early 1970s.

However, in 2004, the ensign was again changed back to the red Cross of St. George as there were complaints that the new flag was indistinguishable because the blue of the navy crest merged with the skies and the sea. A change was made in the flag and the Cross of St. George now had the state emblem derived from the Lion capital of Ashoka in the middle.

In 2014, the ensign was updated to include the national motto “Satyameva Jayate” in the Devanagari script.

The design of the new naval ensign hasn’t been revealed as of now, but sources within the establishment have been reported as saying that the cross will go. Additionally, the naval crest depicting an anchor would be added besides certain colour changes.

Why the change now?

The change in the naval ensign is a nod towards the county’s move towards ‘Atmanirbharta’.

According to the PMO’s statement, the change in the ensign is yet another move to shed India’s colonial past. It is the latest step is part of a wider effort being made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to dispose of the baggage of India’s colonial past.

It has been reported that the issue is so close to the prime minister’s heart that during this year’s Independence Day speech, he set out “an India free of colonial mindset” as one of the Panch Pran for New India in Amrit Kaal.

In the recent times, Prime Minister Modi has taken several steps in this direction — from repealing almost 1,500 old and obsolete laws to unveiling unveiled a hologram statue of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose at India Gate. The hologram is to be later replaced with the statue of Netaji. This is being done at the canopy where a statue of King George V had stood till its removal in 1968.

India not the only to drop the Cross of St. George

Most Commonwealth countries had the Cross of St. George, the patron saint of England, as part of its naval ensigns. However, several countries have done away it to shed their colonial past. India joins other countries such as Australia, New Zealand and Canada in doing away with the Cross of St. George.

Canada transformed their naval ensign in 2013, while Australia changed theirs in 1967. The New Zealand navy also did away with the George’s Cross in 1968.

India seeks details of reasons leading to grounding of US' Chinook CH-47 helicopters

New Delhi: India on Wednesday sought details of the reasons which have led to the grounding of the entire fleet of US Army’s Chinook CH-47 helicopters over the risk of engine fires.

The US Army grounded its entire fleet of Chinook helicopters, a battlefield workhorse since the 1960s, a media report said on Tuesday.

According to government officials, India has about 15 CH-47 Chinook helicopters.

Over the past few years, they have emerged as one of the major military tools for airlift operations in places like Ladakh and Siachen glaciers to assist Indian forces deployed in these regions.

India received the first batch of Chinook helicopters in February 2019. Boeing completed the delivery of 15 Chinook helicopters to the Indian Air Force in 2020.

The Wall Street Journal, which broke the story, said such an extreme step was taken out of an abundance of caution.

“One of the officials said the fires occurred in recent days”, the Journal said. “The US Army Materiel Command grounded the fleet of hundreds of helicopters out of an abundance of caution.”

Officials told the Wall Street Journal that the US Army was aware of a small number of engine fires in the helicopters, and the incidents didn’t result in any injuries or deaths.

However, officials were looking at more than 70 aircraft that contained a part suspected to be connected to the problem, officials told the daily.

The grounding of the heavy-lift Chinook helicopters could pose logistical challenges for American soldiers, depending on how long the order lasts, the Journal said.

Anna Hazare’s short journey from messiah to muppet

India abhors the corset belt of rigid morality. It breathes in fluidity, philosophy, and nuances of grey.

Which is why Krishna is forever, Gandhi for a long while. And Anna Hazare for a flash an overheated pan in time sends out.

The icon of the India Against Corruption movement is his own caricature today. Or perhaps he was always a caricature; India was too angry and restless for change in 2011-12 to notice.

Today, Anna is dusted out of oblivion at times by parties to throw some rustic morality at rivals and be promptly folded back into the box of forgetting. He has been used most famously against the Congress, and with fast-withering effectiveness against the BJP and the AAP. Funnily, the same Congress welcomed his 2015 stand against the Narendra Modi government’s Land Acquisition Bill.

His latest dung bomb is aimed at Arvind Kejriwal’s controversial liquor policy in Delhi.

Anna’s angry letter, of course, completely misses the point. It is not a critique of a policy which increasingly smells of cartelisation, loss to exchequer in order to benefit cronies, and some seriously shadowy beneficiaries. He does not question why Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia features in the CBI first information report and how one of his close associates, random event managers, and even stand-up comedians got embroiled in it?

Or why the AAP government kept a massive Rs 150 crore annual turnover as entry limit for bidding for contracts? It led to two large companies, Indo Spirit and Brindco Spirits, getting about 80 per cent of Delhi’s wholesale Indian liquor business by pushing out small traders? Or if a similar policy was being planned for Punjab, where the powerful liquor lobby is known to bankroll elections for parties?

No, Hazare’s letter does not raise any such questions of worth. It is instead a vague, moral rant with lots of dead wordplay like “drunk on power” thrown in.

Anna accuses Kejriwal of promoting the production and consumption of liquor in Delhi. “It will pave the way for liquor shops in every nook and corner and encourage rampant corruption,” he writes. In reality, the AAP’s new liquor policy has pushed smaller players out and has already put more than 100 vends across the city out of business.

Anna does show up the mirror to the Delhi chief minister’s hypocrisy. Kejriwal, in his earlier sanctimonious avatar, had suggested in his book, Swaraj, that women’s consent must be taken before opening liquor shops. Anna reminds him of that.

For a former army truck driver who would tie up village drunks and thrash them with his service belt, one does not expect an insightful deliberation on the changing liquor policy of a modern metropolis. Nor does he have the moral and intellectual bandwidth of an MK Gandhi to wing it.

Anna Hazare played an immense role in transforming India at a very critical point in history. He was the mascot thrown up by that moment. Arvind Kejriwal turned that agitation into a rising political force. He shepherded the idealistic energy of the Lokpal agitation to cynical, wily, and often megalomaniac political manoeuvres. He won Delhi, then Punjab, and has eyes on states like Assam and Gujarat. From freebies to flirting with Khalistan sympathisers to soft Hindutva, he moved with time, while Anna got cut-off and totally out-of-step.

Anna Hazare is a classic example of what happens when you want to extend your political expiry date by popping up with moral lectures every now and then. One wonders what would have happened to Gandhi if he had lived on… without actual political power, but seeking the periodic moral disruption.

Anna Hazare must sit down. As it stands now, he has nothing new to give. He has got enough love for a lifetime to not seek attention and not allow himself to be used.

Guruji Talim is ranked third on the list of Pune’s renowned Ganpatis. The idol was created by the Shinde and Nalban families as a representation of the harmony between the Hindus and Muslims in the city. Pune residents are drawn to this Ganpati pandal for its opulent procession and visarjan.

Celebration:

With no COVID restrictions this year, Mumbai’s famous Ganesh pandals are gearing up to celebrate Ganesh Utsav with zeal and enthusiasm. Lalbaugcha Raja Sarvajanik Mandal, which was founded in 1934, is celebrating its 89th anniversary this year and expects more visitors now as the state government has lifted restrictions.

Lalbaugcha Raja, in his 12-foot form, will be in his regal throne this year. This year’s theme is the Ayodhya Ram temple. The decorations at Lalbaughcha Raja are being designed by well-known art director Nitin Chandrakant Desai.

Girgaon Cha Raja, a 25-foot eco-friendly idol, is another well-known Ganesh pandal. In 2018, Prime Minister Narendra Modi mentioned the pandal in his Maan Ki Baat speech. It was founded in 1928. This year marks the mandal’s 95th anniversary. The Ganesh idol is 25 feet tall, and made of clay.

PM Modi's understanding of people and society best after Mahatma Gandhi, says Defence Minister Rajnath Singh

Senior BJP leader and defence minister Rajnath Singh on Monday heaped praise on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, highlighted his organisational skills, described him as an incomparable strategist in independent India, and pointed out that he sleeps for just three and a half hours a day. The minister also said that PM Modi’s ability to connect with the masses and his understanding of society is the best in the country after Mahatma Gandhi.

While recounting his personal interactions with the PM, the minister, who was speaking at the release of the book, The Architect of the New BJP: How Narendra Modi Transformed the Party, by seasoned journalist Ajay Singh, said that he was surprised at the alertness and energy of Modi.

“I asked him about his daily routine as he looks so energetic in the morning as well as in the evening. He told me that he sleeps for three and a half hours and that is enough for him,” said the minister. “The only leader that understands the people of this country is Narendra Modi. He understands the pulse of the masses. I can say in the past eight years the expansion of the party is because of the ideology but more than that it was due to Modi’s zeal to take that ideology to masses through a strategy.”

The BJP leader praised Modi for expanding the party beyond caste lines and sections of society and removing the tag of it being a “party of urban voters”. The minister said that the book talks about the qualities of Modi as a strategist that set him apart from the rest of the politicians in the country.

“You will not find any politician in independent India who will deliver more than expected of him in whatever responsibility he is given, by either the Sangh or BJP. This is true that he had not contested elections before 2001, and after 2001 he has not lost any election he contested. This has contributed to his image of an undefeatable strategist,” stated Rajnath Singh.

‘Modi brought the Northeast closer to the party’

The BJP leader said that it was due to the efforts of PM Modi that the BJP and the NDA have governments in all seven states of the Northeast.

“I do not hesitate to say that whatever the BJP attained post-2014 is due to PM Modi. No one used to speak about the possibility of BJP governments in the states of the Northeast. People used to mock those who would mention this. Today, we have an NDA government in all seven states. The party has expanded even in those areas where we had no one who would take the party’s name,” he said.

‘People reposed faith in Modi after demonetisation too’

The union minister said that when rivals started writing PM Modi’s political obituary after the demonetisation move, people put their faith in him.

“The book also throws light on how he won the hearts of the people on tough steps like demonetisation. Despite so much trouble that the people went through, he managed to make them understand the importance of the decision and no one else could have achieved it. It was because of people’s faith in him. This is evident from the success we got in elections that happened soon after the demonetisation. People knew his intentions were right,” said Singh.

2024 Lok Sabha polls and beyond

The minister pointed out that political analysts say that whosoever wants to replace PM Modi should target 2029 as he is going to win again in 2024.

“I believe this cannot be possible without God’s blessings. The new political system in Jammu and Kashmir, triple talaq law, Ayodhya’s Ram Mandir, Kashi Vishwanath redevelopment, having a network of expressways, starting medical colleges, providing up to Rs 5 lakh worth of free medical treatment to the poor, building infrastructure at borders with Pakistan and China, National Education Policy, pucca houses, toilets, roads, electricity, taking culture to newer heights— there is no match to the Modi government,” he added.

‘Amending cultural, historical mistakes’

Rajnath Singh did not forget to mention the Pradhanmantri Sangrahalaya (Prime Ministers’ Museum), with which PM Modi has ensured that people are aware of the legacy of his predecessors.

“Pt Nehru, Lal Bahadur Shastri, and Manmohan Singh…along with 13 PMs’ achievements have been showcased. Also, ‘sanskritik bhool sudhar ke saath, historical political vikrityon ko theek kiya jaa raha hai’ (We are amending cultural mistakes and historical political distortions),” said Singh.

‘Modi hai to mumkin hai’

The minister also said that “Modi hai to mumkin hai” is not just a slogan. “At the time of Covid, PM Modi taught the world about self-reliance while the opposition was mocking his efforts. He did not bother about that,” he added.

The BJP leader also spoke extensively on the PM’s experiences and where he draws his strategic efficiency from.

“His strategic efficiency did not come from a day’s experience but from his ‘pravas’ (travels) he did across the country over the years and from his understanding of the country. People are looking at alternatives but they are not finding any. He has accepted every task that was given either by the organisation or others. His strategy of expansion that he devised in Gujarat in 1980 was replicated by him in Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh by deploying cadres, and he had the vision of having a party office in every district,” said Singh. “He has turned the BJP into an election-winning machine by using his experiences without compromising on ideology.”

People-connect

Rajnath Singh also recalled PM Modi’s achievements since his Gujarat days. “The then chief minister Amarsinh Chaudhary banned the Jagannath Yatra in Ahmedabad. However, signs were put up across the crossing that the yatra would continue despite the ban. On the morning, people started gathering and it took the shape of a yatra. Chaudhary made a committee to investigate the role of PM Modi in organising the yatra,” the minister said.

While praising the PM, Singh delved into another one of his qualities: always thinking about how to connect schemes to the common people.

“In Gujarat, the Statue of Unity in Kevadia was to be constructed. This could have been done with government funds, but taking donations from farmers of their junked paraphernalia from the fields was his idea. It connected lakhs of farmers with the statue. Five lakh villages participated in the process and thus they became emotionally linked to the statue,” he added.

After losing balance due to potholes, 22-year-old man run over by tanker truck

In yet another civic apathy, a 22-year-old man in Maharashtra’s Thane district was run over by a truck after his bike lost balance because of potholes on Sunday. Occurring on the Diva-Agasan road, the shocking incident was caught on a security camera. Citing an official release issued by Thane Municipal Corporation regional disaster management cell chief Avinash Sawant, NDTV reported that the victim was identified as Ganesh Fale. The video of the entire incident, which unfortunately happened on 28 August, was shared by Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) Member of Legislative Assembly Raju Patil on his twitter account. The report claims that police officials are investigating the incident.

The now-viral video shows a young man on his scooty crossing a tanker truck, coming from the opposite direction. The moment the young man on the scooty reaches close to the tanker, he loses his balance after riding on a pothole and coming under the rear wheels of the heavy-weight vehicle. A man and a woman coming from behind were panicking to witness the scenario and raised their hands to make the tanker stop after which several passersby can be seen gathered at the site. As per the news agency PTI, the victim was rushed to Kalwa civic hospital where he was declared brought dead by the doctors.

While his body has reportedly been sent for post-mortem, a case has been registered and further investigation is on. MLA Patil, while sharing the video, wrote in Marathi in the caption that a man died because of the pothole and also tagged Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. Patil’s post further alleged that the roadworks are only announced on paper, but are not implemented in reality.

Earlier, a man in Thane was crushed to death after his bike rode over a pothole and he came under a state bus at Ghodbunder Road. The deceased was identified as 37-year-old Mohnish. While the commuters have been complaining of the potholes for quite some time now, heavy rains have worsened the scenario.

Snake perches on woman while she rests on cot; video will leave you shocked

Indian Forest Service (IFS) officer Susanta Nanda is known for sharing really interesting videos on Twitter. But his latest post can cause a shiver to run down your spine. Susanta Nanda recently shared a video in which a snake can be seen perched over a woman while she is lying on a cot. The reptile moves to the neck of the woman while she remained in the same position. In the footage, the woman can apparently be heard asking for help. According to Susanta Nanda, the snake moved away after a few minutes without causing any harm to the woman.  The video was tweeted with the caption, “When this happens, what would be your reaction? For information, the snake moved away after few minutes without out causing any harm.”

Watch this video here:

The chilling video garnered a variety of comments. Some people appreciated the woman for not making any sudden movements. “Best reaction would be 'Not to react at all'.”, a user wrote.

One person commented, “I would have reacted the same way as the woman there is doing: Silently chanting shiva's name! This video is a proof that faith in God gives strength to face the tough times in life.”

“I have heard such incidents from my grandmother. When houses had thatched roofs, firewood stores in corner snakes including Cobras moved around & left the place unharmed if not confronted or scared. They normally come looking for rats or frogs if in open”, an account said.

One individual wrote, “As far as I know, snakes are more afraid of humans than humans are of snakes. I think that they will not attack unless they sense a hostile attitude. So, if possible, a human should quietly move away or keep still. But I will let experts suggest on this.”

Some users had very interesting stories to share. “Yep. My uncle lived alone in an old thatched roof house of a village. He would meditate in the morning (4-6AM) and by the time he finished there would be a few snakes around him. They would move out peacefully after he finished.”, a person recalled.

According to National Geographic, there are more than 3,000 species of snake around the globe. Out of them, 600 are venomous, and about 200 species can kill or significantly wound a human being.

Hyundai Global Motors withdraws from government’s PLI scheme for batteries

Hyundai Global Motors Pvt. Ltd. has withdrawn its name from the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme for advanced chemistry cell battery storage worth Rs 18,100 crore after South Korean automobile giant Hyundai Motor Company (HMC) is not affiliated with Hyundai Global Motors in any shape or form.

“Hyundai Motor Company and HMIL (Hyundai Motor India Ltd) urges the general public, traders, business associates and all government and non-government bodies to proceed with caution while dealing with Hyundai Global Motors Co. Limited, South Korea as they are not related to our company,” Hyundai Motor India Ltd, the Indian subsidiary of Hyundai, said in a press statement.

Following the announcement, Hyundai Global Motors has withdrawn its name from the PLI scheme. The company was one of the entities initially selected even as the government re-examined its application after the South Korean automobile manufacturer issued the clarification.

The government is now likely to allocate the 20 gigawatt-hour (GWh) of capacity awarded to Hyundai Global Motors to Reliance New Energy Ltd, the green energy subsidiary of Reliance Industries, and Mahindra & Mahindra, stated a person with knowledge of the matter to Mint. The two companies were the next eligible ones in the PLI scheme.
Apart from these two, the government had signed agreements with two other companies on July 28 for the PLI scheme – Rajesh Exports and Ola Electric Mobility Pvt. Even though Hyundai Global Motors was initially selected, the clarification from HMIL on July 15 meant no agreement was signed.

Under the PLI programme, the private players are expected to create a total advanced battery manufacturing capacity of 95 GWh. Under the scheme, private companies need to set up manufacturing facilities within two years from the award of the project. The incentives will then be disbursed over a period of five years based on the sale of batteries manufactured within India.

NCPCR challenges High Court ruling on Muslim minor girl's marriage at Supreme Court

New Delhi: The National Commission for the Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has moved the Supreme Court against a recent ruling by a high court stating that Muslim girls can marry once they attain puberty.

On Saturday, advocate Swarupama Chaturvedi filed a special leave petition, on behalf of the NCPCR, challenged the recent order by the Punjab and Haryana High Court that said in June, a Muslim girl, over 16 years of age, is competent to marry a person of her choice.

A report in Economic Times said that the apex body said that the ruling was not just a violation of the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006, but also the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO).

The POCSO is a legislation to protect children from sexual crimes.

The NCPCR on its part has said that the ruling is in contradiction with other laws that govern child rights in the cuntry. An official added that as a body meant for child protection, it is the NCPCR’s responsibility to protect the life and liberty of all children and in their view the ruling is a violation of two laws.

As per the official, the ruling violates the PCM act, that is a general secular law not distinguishing between religions and the POCSO Act that does not distinguish between married and unmarried girls.

“The ruling is indirectly affirming a child marriage and not only violating existing laws. Child protection laws cannot be seen as separate from Article 21. In fact they strengthen the right to life,” the official said.

The official added that there is also a Delhi High Court order from a month back which did not affirm the marriage of a minor citing it to be a violation of POCSO and so they want to know how can there be conflicting views on the same.

The Punjab and Haryana HC’s assertion came during a petition filed by a Muslim couple, who solemnised their marriage in June as per Muslim rites.
