Watch: Indian Coast Guard unfurls Tricolour under water ahead of 75th Independence Day celebrations

The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) performed an underwater flag demo in anticipation of the 75th Independence Day celebrations. The video of the same was shared by the official Twitter handle of ICG.

“As part of 75th years of India’s independence celebration, @IndiaCoastGuard performed an underwater flag Demo at Sea. This initiative is to invoke the feeling of patriotism in the hearts of the people”, the organisation wrote while sharing the clip. It also used the hashtags Har Ghar Tiranga and Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.

Watch:

The 22-second clip has received several comments since it was posted on 29 July. Many people praised the Indian Coast Guard for this endeavour.

Others wrote that this was the way to celebrate our independence. https://twitter.com/simon_robin/status/1553017713567535105

However, some viewers wrote that this could be a violation of the nation’s flag code.

Here are some more reactions:

Recently the Centre had launched the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign to inspire citizens to display the Tricolour at their businesses and homes to mark the country’s 75th Independence Day. To assist in this initiative, the Narendra Modi- led government had amended the ‘Flag Code of India 2002’ as well.

To mark the 75th Independence Day, people can now buy or manufacture the Tricolour from synthetic fabric. Earlier, the flag was to be made from Khadi only. Apart from this, people will be permitted to hoist the tricolour throughout the day, instead of between sunrise and sunset.

In his Mann Ki Baat address on 31 July, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had suggested that people could place the Tricolour on their social media profiles in the run-up to the Independence Day celebrations.

“Under the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, from August 13-15, a special movement – Har Ghar Tiranga is being organised. I have a suggestion that from August 2-15, all of us can place the Tricolor in our social media profile pictures,” Modi stated.

'Gun should be dealt with a gun': Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi on dealing with enemies of India

New Delhi: Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi has said that there should be zero tolerance towards violence and the government should avoid negotiating with anyone who talks against the unity and integrity of the country.

Speaking at an event in Kochi on Sunday, he said, "...Zero tolerance to violence. Anyone who uses a gun should be dealt with a gun. There should be no negotiation with anyone who talks against unity and integrity of the country."

Ravi, who had played a key role as an interlocutor between the government and the Isak Muivah-led National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN-IM), said there had been no talks with any armed group in the last eight years if not for surrender.

Hitting out at the previous UPA regime for handling of Pakistan after the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, he said it has to be clear if Pakistan is a friend or an enemy.

"When 26/11 Mumbai terrorist attack happened, the whole country was traumatised; the country was humiliated by a handful of terrorists. However, within nine months of the attacks, our then prime minister and Pakistan prime minister signed a joint communique stating both countries were victims of terrorism. What is this?" he asked.

Recalling the Pulwama attack in which 46 soldiers were killed, he said the forces hit back at Pakistan in Balakot using air power to give a clear message that if you commit an act of terrorism you will have to pay the cost.

Unmanned air mobility fast becoming a reality: Why India should not miss the bus

In 2020, Dubai passed a new regulation “to help flying taxis and drone deliveries to take off” alongside a network of mini-airports within the city. For a long time, there have been helicopter services from airports to city centres. Advances in battery and electric propulsion technology, and Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) design have supported Urban Air Mobility (UAM) and now given a flip. Tilt-rotor systems have been tried and tested and will support regional connectivity till 300 km. UAM envisions a safe and efficient aviation transportation system that will use highly automated aircraft that will operate and transport passengers or cargo at lower altitudes within urban and suburban areas.

UAM will be composed of an ecosystem that considers the evolution and safety of the aircraft, the framework for operation, access to airspace, infrastructure development, and community engagement. It will envisage commercial inter-city travel (like air taxis), cargo delivery, public services, and private or recreational vehicles.

The initial UAM ecosystem will use existing helicopter infrastructure such as routes, helipads, and Air Traffic Control (ATC) services. Looking toward the future, the agencies are evolving infrastructure specially designed for UAM. It would mean designating routes along the main city arteries and developing new vertiports. On 2 March 2022, the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued draft interim guidance, to support the design and operation of facilities that electric VTOL aircraft will use for initial operations. Many companies are developing the next generation VTOL vehicles.

Passenger acceptance and potential passengers' value of time are the two key factors for going ahead. The UAM vehicle could either be rotary-wing, fixed-wing or hybrid cruise vehicles. There is the need to understand the landscape of relevant questions surrounding the implementation of UAM. The urban airspace would have to look at safety factors, social aspects, system and aircraft issues.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles

The unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) have been flying since the 1970s, and the safety record has been continuously improving. Removing pilots dramatically increases payload and reduces personnel costs. Also there has been a boom in less expensive civil travel and light personal jets. UAM is the next logical step. UAM evolved from the Advanced Air Mobility (AAM), a joint initiative of the FAA, NASA, and the industry to develop an air transportation system that moves passengers and cargo with new electric (i.e. green) air vehicles to places previously under-served by traditional aviation. Nearly 150 companies worldwide are in the race with under-testing UAM prototypes. The UAVs had to be made more robust for passenger flights.

Hybrid Propulsion

Electric motors in multi-rotor designs for “lift-and-cruise” have started maturing. More efficient rotors are using lightweight materials. Hybrid-electric turbo-generators are being combined with rugged turbine engines using conventional or bio-derived jet fuel that power motors or high-capacity batteries. The battery endurance is increasing, and the same is evolving further by the surface transport industry. The electromechanical actuators would be very important for UAM aircraft. Since the flight will be at low heights, they will experience thermals and the unusual winds caused by buildings. The pinpoint landings dozens of times a day would require fly-by-wire computers to make hundreds of small adjustments every second. The actuators would make these movements maintaining the highest degrees of precision and reliability.

Flight Safety Issues

Unlike a traditional helicopter, the UAMs will use multiple motors and propellers, electric engines, and lighter materials, which make them cheaper, quieter, and more efficient. The operations will be both urban and regional. Limited airspace and a larger number of operators would cause congestion. It may push the industry to adopt smaller separation standards. The safety record and acceptable risk models for hobby drones are clearly unacceptable. The on-board systems will have to have quadruple safeties and high reliability.

Since the UAM vehicles will have more degrees of freedom to freely choose their position, altitude, heading, and speed, this will require safety clearances. That would also require high technological capabilities, such as dynamic geo-fences and advanced sense-and-avoid capabilities, to maintain the required safety levels. Some such features already exist in drone swarms. Collision avoidance algorithms, avoidance maps, and path-planning would be required. Very compact traffic collision avoidance system and enhanced ground proximity warning system, including avoiding buildings, made up of multiple electronic beams using a small phased array, are under testing.

Flight and Weather

Tall urban buildings create wind gusts and cause significant turbulence in their proximity. This can affect aircraft’s ability to maintain position, altitude, and stability. Even the autopilot may be overtaxed and cause divergences. Precipitation can increase resistance or could affect on-board electronics. Low temperatures can reduce battery life. Icing can affect airframes or propellers and increase drone weight. Visibility and low ceiling could reduce the effectiveness of sense-and-avoid avionics. Close monitoring weather is thus required.

Traffic Challenges and Control

The UAVs used for recreation, policing, infrastructure inspection, forestry and agriculture purposes remain in specific geographic regions and require limited traffic management. Accommodating exponential UAM traffic will require solutions for communication, navigation, surveillance, and overall air traffic management. Differences in air vehicle designs and sizes and performance will make it complex. Higher numbers, greater density, lower altitudes of operations, will need handling.

Rules of air, routes, and scheduling would have to be evolved. Traffic management would mean flight path clearance, time slot scheduling, and at times first-come-first-launch approval. The routes will be based on demand and social factors. Separate corridors would have to be designated. It may be interesting to follow the main-road as an axis. UAM aerodromes would be nearer to the main roads. Streetlight poles and electricity transmission towers would be a factor. Two-way traffic lanes would need horizontal and vertical separation. Tall building rooftops may be the UAM ports for ease of climb and descent.

Building UAM Infrastructure

The UAM ground infrastructure will have to dovetail into the other urban and regional transportation system. Maintenance and battery management would have to be factored. Vertiport sites will emerge based on estimated air taxi demand. Take-off and landing pads, communication, navigation, surveillance infrastructure, and seat-booking will have to be evolved, and fit into the overall urban plan. Air taxis may require booking like car aggregators Ola and Uber, including ride-sharing. The initial air taxi service would be on manned aircraft and later shift to unmanned. Cargo movement through UAM will be a good starting point.

Technologies and Certification

LTE and 5G-and-beyond cellular technologies and secure satellite links will be required for communication. Assured accurate GPS and backups will be crucial. Battery and hybrid fuel cell technologies will be important. Lighter yet stronger materials must keep evolving. The UAM certification and regulations have to evolve through global standardisation. Volocopter eVTOL pilots and maintenance technician training is being evolved. There will be demand for pilots and they would need certification to operate an eVTOL and remote eVTOLs. The International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) and FAA are leading the process. UAM transportation policy and aircraft certification guidelines have to be in place first.

Public Confidence and Social Factors

The public is still sceptical about getting into an unmanned air taxi. Very few feel comfortable flying alone in an automated aircraft, even though accompanied by other passengers. Public acceptance will increase once self-driven cars become common. Since UAM will operate at low flight levels, closer to residential areas, communities will be concerned about security, privacy, liability, and noise, visual, and air pollution.

UAM rotor sound can at times be irritating, both in volume and frequency. It would affect sleep. Quieter air vehicles would need to be designed. Drone equipped with cameras could capture images that impact privacy. People, in general, have positive attitudes towards innovation and new technology, but expect high safety assurance. Cost of transportation and ticketing will be an issue. Time-cost saving analysis would be made with other modes of travel.

Portable Personal Air Mobility System

The Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is in the process of granting contracts for construction and flight demonstration of “Portable Personal Air Mobility System” that can be used by soldiers for shorts hops of around 10 km. These will be mobile, small, light-weight, and compact. One can assemble them in a short time with minimal training. Once successful, it would be available for civil use akin to the bicycle of the air.

A Bright Future Ahead

Automation and electricity storage technologies, and higher flight safety will spur urban unmanned aviation. Rotary or fixed-wing cruise vehicles are already past the prototype stage. The UAM are currently in the “honeymoon” phase. UAM will be safe, sustainable and convenient. By 2030, 60 percent of the world's population will be urban, and this will create UAM demand. Hundreds of start-ups are evolving new automated aircraft. Issues related to regulation, air-traffic management and public perception are being addressed.

A holistic approach to urban air mobility, would mean seamlessly integrating a variety of critical components. Most commercial airports are currently located in the suburbs. The vertiports will mostly be located in more densely populated areas. NASA, FAA, including India’s DGCA, are actively involved. The aircraft will be initially owned and operated by professional operators, as with taxis, rather than by private individuals. Big players in UAM include Amazon, Boeing, Airbus, Embraer-X, Uber elevate, and Singapore UTM, among others. Maximising safety and capacity after understanding technological complexity, noise, and privacy is the essence.

For UAM aircraft to be most efficient, recharging, swapping batteries, and hydrogen refuelling must be done as quickly as possible. If it is safe to travel to space in an automated unmanned craft, so will it be in case of UAM. Some cities are encouraging the idea of inexpensive, point-to-point air travel as a way of reducing traffic congestion and moving goods. A European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) survey showed that 83 per cent of respondents had a positive attitude towards UAM, while 71 per cent were ready to try UAM services.

Emerging big economy like India would have to get on-board early and reap the benefits. India must also try to become a manufacturing hub and support the huge automation software demands. Notwithstanding the Shatabdi trains and newly developed expressways, it may be more interesting to take an unmanned air-taxi from Faridabad to Karnal. It may also be a better way to travel from Greater Noida to Gurgaon on a Friday evening. And as it becomes possible, the loved ones will not be too far away.

Muslim Women's Rights Day 2022: Know history and significance

Muslim Women's Rights Day is celebrated all over the country on 1 August to mark the enactment of the triple talaq law. This law, which made the practice of triple talaq a criminal offence, came into force on 1 August 2019.

The practice of triple talaq had allowed Indian Muslim husbands to instantly divorce their wives by saying the word "talaq" three times continuously, without considering her consent on the matter.

History

The Muslim Personal Law (Shariat) Application Act of 1937 had given Indian Muslim husbands special privileges over their wives, which included the practice of triple talaq. Also known as Talaq-a-Biddat, triple talaq was practiced by many. On 1 August 2019, after the Rajya Sabha passed the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2019 on 31 July, the law came into force. This Act made the practice of triple talaq illegal.

The law was deemed controversial by some sections of society, who protested against it. But the government stood firm on its objective to enact the law. To commemorate the day, the government announced in 2021 that Muslim Women's Rights Day will be observed across the country on 1 August.

Significance

The law against triple talaq was successful in making the practice a cognizable criminal offense punishable by up to three years in prison and a fine. The Bill passed by the Narendra Modi-led government also allowed that “a married Muslim woman shall be entitled to custody of her minor children in the event of pronouncement of talaq by her husband, in such manner as may be determined by the magistrate”.

The law against the Triple Talaq helps to safeguard gender equality. It also strengthens the  fundamental, constitutional, and democratic rights of millions of women across India.  The bill also promotes the self-reliance, self-respect and self-esteem of millions on Muslim women.  The law has been successful in reducing cases of triple talaq by 80 per cent since it was passed, as per reports.

Patra Chawl land scam case: ED officials at Sanjay Raut's residence after he skips summons twice

New Delhi: Trouble mounted for Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut on Sunday as Enforcement Directorate officials reached his residence around 7am.

According to reports, the officials are currently searching Raut's premises and questioning him in connection with Patra Chawl land scam case.

The ED officials visited his residence after he skipped its summons twice in the case linked to alleged irregularities in the re-development of a Mumbai 'chawl' and related financial transactions involving his wife and alleged associates.

The Shiv Sena leader was summoned by the probe agency on 27 July after he skipped an earlier summon citing the ongoing Parliament session in Delhi.

The Rajya Sabha MP, who is in the Uddhav Thackeray camp, had denied any wrongdoing and alleged that he was being targeted due to political vendetta.

In April this year, the ED had attached immovable properties worth Rs 11.15 crore, including a flat at Dadar, held by Raut’s wife Varsha and eight land parcels at Kihim near Alibag, jointly held by the latter with Swapna Patkar, in connection with the redevelopment scam. Swapna is the wife of Sujit Patkar, a close associate of the Sena leader.

The federal agency said its investigation revealed that around Rs 100 crore was transferred from the real estate company, HDIL, to the account of Pravin Raut, who in turn diverted part of these funds to various accounts of his close associates, family members, and business entities.

Praveen Raut has been a director in an infrastructure company called Guruashish constructions and is stated to be a subsidiary of the HDIL (Housing Development Infrastructure Limited), an accused in the case. Pravin Raut was arrested in the past by the Maharashtra police’s economic offences wing.

Mumbai: Maharashtra Congress chief Nana Patole on Saturday sought Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari's removal from his position with immediate effect after the latter said there will be no money left in Mumbai and it will cease to be the financial capital of the country if Gujaratis and Rajasthanis are removed from the city.

"We condemn the remarks made by Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari. He should apologise to the public. He should be removed from his position with immediate effect," Nana Patole said.

Speaking at an event in Mumbai, Koshyari said, “I tell people here that if Gujaratis and Rajasthanis are removed from Maharashtra, especially Mumbai and Thane, you will have no money and Mumbai will not be a financial capital.” He made the statement after the naming ceremony of a chowk in Andheri, a western suburb of Mumbai.

Ease of Justice equally important in Amrit Yatra of the country: PM Modi

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday addressed the inaugural session of the First All India District Legal Services Authorities Meet and said that like Ease of Doing Business and Ease of Living, 'Ease of Justice' is equally important in 'Amrit Yatra' of the country.

Addressing the gathering, he said this is the time of Azadi ke Amrit Kaal. This is the time for the resolutions that will take the country to new heights in the next 25 years, he added, read a statement from the Prime Minister's Office.

The Prime Minister highlighted the place of legal aid in the directive principles of the state policy. This importance is reflected in the faith of the citizens in the Judiciary of the country. He said, "As important as access to the judicial system is for any society, justice delivery is equally important. The judicial infrastructure also has an important contribution to this. In the last eight years, work has been done at a fast pace to strengthen the judicial infrastructure of the country."

Chief Justice of India NV Ramana, Supreme Court Judges Justice UU Lalit, Justice DY Chandrachud, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju, SP Singh Baghel, other Supreme Court Judges, Chief Justices of High Courts, Executive Chairpersons of the State Legal Services Authorities (SLSAs) and Chairpersons of the District Legal Services Authorities (DLSAs) were present on the occasion. The Prime Minister also released a commemorative postal stamp on the 'Right to free legal aid'.

Underlining India’s leadership in information technology and fintech, PM Modi stressed that there can not be a better time to introduce more power of technology to judicial proceedings. He said “under the e-Courts Mission, virtual courts are being started in the country. 24-hour courts have started functioning for crimes like traffic violations. Video conferencing infrastructure is also being expanded in the courts for the convenience of the people.”

The Prime Minister said that more than one crore cases have been heard through video conferencing in the country. This proves that “our judicial system is committed to the ancient Indian values of justice and, at the same time, is ready to match the realities of the 21st century.”

He further said, "A common citizen should be aware of his rights and duties in the Constitution. They should be aware of their Constitution, and constitutional structures, rules and remedies. Technology can play a big role in this too."

Reiterating that Amrit Kaal is a period of duty, the Prime Minister said we have to work on the areas that have remained neglected so far. Modi once again raised the issue of sensitivity towards undertrial prisoners. He said that the District Legal Services Authorities can take up the responsibility of providing legal aid to such prisoners. He also appealed to the District Judges, as Chairpersons of undertrial review committees, to expedite the release of undertrial prisoners.

The Prime Minister complimented NALSA for undertaking a campaign in this regard. He also urged the Bar Council to encourage more lawyers to get involved in this campaign, the PMO statement said.

The first-ever national level meet of District Legal Services Authorities (DLSAs) is being organised from 30-31 July at Vigyan Bhawan by National Legal Services Authority (NALSA). The meeting will deliberate on the creation of an integrated procedure in order to bring homogeneity and synchronisation across DLSAs.

There are a total of 676 District Legal Services Authorities in the country. They are headed by the District Judge who acts as Chairman of the authority. Through DLSAs and State Legal Services Authorities, various legal aid and awareness programmes are implemented by NALSA. The DLSAs also contribute towards reducing the burden on courts by regulating the Lok Adalats conducted by NALSA.

Actors Akshay Kumar and Suniel Shetty have given fans many memorable superhits in their early career. Films like Hera Pheri, Dhadkan, De Dana Dan, and Awara Paagal Deewana among others were much loved by the audience.

Recently, a video from one of their classic hits Sapoot has been making waves on social media. Released in 1996, Sapoot was directed by Jagdish A Sharma and starred Kumar, Shetty alongside Karisma Kapoor and Sonali Bendre in the lead.

The brief scene from the film shows science and logic going for a toss and this has left social media users rolling on the floor laughing.

In the clip, both the leading actors - who play brothers in Sapoot - can be seen trying to save their sister Anju (Shalini Kapoor) from falling off a high-rise building. They can be seen asking her to stop as she weeps and request them not to come near her. However, the young woman slips, and Kumar and Shetty, somehow hold her hand tightly.

As she slips through her brother’s hands, the duo can be heard screaming out loud. They are heard saying ‘statue’ to her while showing the statue signal in unison. The woman then falls to her death with bruises on her face.

The now-viral clip was shared by Twitter user Gina Kholkar who captioned it saying, “Exactly why I still have cable in my house!”

Watch the hilarious video here:

Kumar and Shetty’s dialogue 'statue' left social media users in splits. Many mocked the lack of scientific logic while others made fun of it. One user said, "For a moment I expected 'statue' spell will work" while another wrote, "I need cable in my house. This is gold." A user commented "Statue ke bad 'Police will catch you' bhi bolna padta hai."

Check a few reactions here:

What is your opinion on this logic defying scene?

From 1963 to 2022: The long history of the Indian Air Force’s MiG-21 and its many crashes

On Thursday night, two Indian Air Force pilots were killed when their twin-seater MiG-21 trainer aircraft crashed during a training sortie near Barmer in Rajasthan.

The accident took place around 9.10 pm when the aircraft was on a sortie from Utarlai air base.

Following the crash, Defence Minister spoke to Air Chief Marshal V R Chaudhari. He also expressed his sorrow and anguish over the death of the two pilots.

The Indian Air Force has stated that a Court of Inquiry has been ordered to ascertain the cause of the accident.

The accident is the latest in the long list of tragedies that the aircraft has been involved in — over 200 — since it induction into the Air Force in the early 1960s.

It also raises the question: Why does the Indian Air Force continue to use these Soviet-origin aircraft despite their poor safety record.

The MiGs long stay in the IAF

The MiG-21 is India’s longest-serving fighter plane. Designed by the Mikoyan-Gurevich Design Bureau (OKB) of the erstwhile Soviet Union, it made its maiden flight on 16 June 1955.

India got its first single-engine MiG-21 in 1963, and it progressively inducted 874 variants of the Soviet-origin supersonic fighters to bolster its combat potential.

The 1962 war with China and growing hostility from Pakistan had lent urgency to efforts to rapidly scale up India’s indifferent military capability despite its cash-strapped economy. The Soviet Union was willing to sell this fighter aircraft on extremely favourable terms and even agreed for licensed production by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).

The plane has seen several updates and modifications since then.

Over the years, the MiG became the mainstay of the India Air Force and as per a News18 report of 2019, more than 1,200 MiG fighters have been introduced into the IAF.

The plane received tremendous coverage in 2019 when Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman, piloting the aircraft, had shot down a F-16 fighter of Pakistan a day after India had carried out the Balakot air strikes.

‘Flying coffin, widow maker’

Although the aircraft is the backbone of the force in some ways, it also has been dubbed grim names such as the “widow-maker” or the “flying coffin” owing to the numerous crashes.

A Times of India report states that more than 400 MiG-21s have crashed since 1971-72, killing over 200 pilots and another 50 people on the ground.

The database of Bharat-Rakshak.com, an aviation website that works closely with the IAF, has clearly listed the accidents that the MiG has seen since its induction.

The first two MiG crashes took place in December 1963. In the subsequent years, the aircraft went down on numerous occasions.

In 2012, former Defence Minister AK Antony had said in Parliament that more than half of the 872 MiG aircraft purchased from Russia had crashed. Due to which, more than 200 persons, including 171 pilots, 39 civilians, and eight other services’ people, had lost their lives.

Last year, there were five crashes involving the MiG-21, resulting in the death of three pilots.

On 17 March, Group Captain Ashish Gupta was killed when his MiG-21 crashed after taking off from the Gwalior airbase. The seasoned officer was on a combat training mission, which ended in an emergency as he couldn’t eject from the aircraft on time.

Two months later, on 20 May, Squadron leader Abhinav Choudhary, (28), was killed when his MiG-21 Bison crashed after taking off from the Suratgarh airbase in Rajasthan. The aircraft was on a training sortie from Suratgarh in Rajasthan when it crashed in Langeana village in Punjab's Moga.

Later in December of last year, Wing Commander Harshit Sinha was killed when a MiG-21 plane crashed in Rajasthan's Jaisalmer during a training sortie. News agency PTI had then said that the plane had crashed in the Desert National Park area under the Sam police station.

Still a preferred choice?

The IAF continues to use the MiG even though the Soviet Air Force — credited with designing the aircraft — removed it from service in the year 1985. After 1985, even Bangladesh and Afghanistan removed it from service.

However, a number of personnel of the IAF, serving and retired, vouch for the safety record of the MiG-21s. IAF officers point out that former Air Chief Marshals RKS Bhadauria and BS Dhanoa flew the MiG-21 Bison solo during their tenure as chiefs.

Air Vice Marshal Sunil Nanodkar (retired), a former assistant chief of air staff, told the Hindustan Times, “Was there a choice? You have to have a certain number of fighter planes to guard your skies. The induction of multi-role fighters was delayed, only 36 Rafales came instead of the projected requirement of 126 jets, the light combat aircraft (LCA) programme is behind schedule and fighters such as Sukhoi-30 have had serviceability issues. IAF had to make do with its MiG-21 fleet.”

Another officer, Air Marshal Anil Chopra (retired), the Director General of Centre for Air Power Studies (CAPS), told ThePrint, “The MiG-21 Bison is an upgraded aircraft. While the aircraft has got the tag of flying coffins, the safety record of the aircraft is actually good if one compares the years in service and the flying hours.”

Dr Shiv Sastry, who has an interest in military aviation, in his blog Air Power Asia has written that the MiG-21 has a better safety record than other aircraft.

He writes, “Most often, neither the public nor the media knew the difference between MiG-21, 23 or 27. A MiG was a MiG was a MiG. Even a Mirage or An-32 was a MiG. From this grew the idea that the MiG-21 was a flying coffin, an unfair description.”

File image of Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman with Air Chief Marshal B S Dhanoa on board a MiG 21. PTI

What next?

An IndiaSpend report said that the MiG-21 completed their retirement period in the mid-1990s. However, it is still in the skies.

Experts believe that the absence of any more fighter jets in the Indian Air Force for a long time is also one of the reasons for the accident. For a long time, with the inclusion of no new fighter jets in the Air Force, the entire weight is on the MiG-21.

IAF will induct different variants of Tejas LCA in the coming years to replace the ageing aircraft. The defence ministry in 2021 awarded a Rs 48,000-crore contract to Hindustan Aeronautics Limited for 83 LCA Mk-1A jets for IAF. The first Mk-1A aircraft will be delivered to the Air Force in three years, with the rest being supplied by 2030. The deal involves the supply of 73 Mk-1A fighter jets and 10 LCA Mk-1 trainer aircraft.

Former Air Vice Marshal Sunil Nanodkar (retired) said that currently 36 Rafale have been included in the Air Force, but their number is still less compared to the requirement.

As of now, the Indian Air Force has 32 squadrons against the 42 mandated by the government to tackle a collusive threat from China and Pakistan. The number could go down to 28 squadrons by 2024-25 when all the MiG-21s are phased out.
