India's COVID-19 caseload crosses 77.61 lakh with 54,366 new infections; active cases fall below 9%

New Delhi: The total number of coronavirus cases in India climbed 77,61,312 on Friday after more than 54,000 people tested positive for the infectious disease in the past 24 hours, said the Union health ministry.

"A total of 54,366 new infections were reported in a day, while the toll climbed to 1,17,306 with 690 fatalities," the data updated at 8 am showed.

The daily count of COVID-19 cases in India have remained below 60,000 for the fifth day in a row.

The number of active cases of the coronavirus is below 7 lakh. There are 6,95,509 active cases of COVID-19 in the country as on date which comprises 8.96 percent of the total caseload, the data stated.

So far, 69,48,497 people have recuperated from the disease pushing the national recovery rate to 89.53 percent. While the COVID-19 fatality rate was recorded at 1.51 percent.

India's COVID-19 tally had crossed the 20-lakh mark on 7 August, 30 lakh on 23 August and 40 lakh on 5 September. It went past 50 lakh on 16 September, 60 lakh on 28 September and crossed 70 lakh on 11 October.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), a cumulative total of 10,01,13,085 samples have been tested till now. At least 14,42,722 samples were tested on Thursday alone.
