VHP says people are opposing Ram Temple to achieve political goals, counter Hindu interests

Nagpur: Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) general secretary Milind Parande on Thursday alleged that those opposing the Ram temple and subjects linked to it are doing so to achieve their political goals as they have no other option but to counter the interests of Hindus.

He said this while addressing a press conference.

Replying to a query about the recent statements made by NCP chief Sharad Pawar, Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi related to Ram temple, he said, "Some people have made it their business to oppose any subject related with Ram temple. Everybody should understand Ram temple is a symbol of national pride."

"Some people are opposing it. It is part of their politics and their politics is only achieved by opposing the interests of Hindus. All such people don't have any other option but to oppose...," he said, adding that Ram temple will become a centre of communal harmony in the country.

According to the members of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teertha Kshetra trust, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to visit Ayodhya on 5 August for the bhoomi pujan to begin the construction of the Ram temple.

Madhya Pradesh woman forced to carry husband on shoulders to atone for 'extramarital affair'

A woman was beaten up and forced to carry her him on her shoulders over an alleged extramarital affair in a tribal-dominated village of Madhya Pradesh on Tuesday evening.

The woman is seen carrying her husband on her shoulders as punishment, jeered and heckled by villagers, in a video that has emerged from Jhabua district.

"This is an incident in the Chhapri Ranwas Village, where the husband and his wife entered into an argument. As per the information we received, after the arguments, the man was made to sit on her shoulders and she asked to walk across the village," Jhabua Station in-charge Surendra Gadariya, said.

The woman obviously struggled to walk as she carried her husband, but the villagers forced her to go on in the video. The mother of three was hit with sticks when she stopped at one point.

"The woman recorded her statement at a police station later on," he added.

Last year, a similar punishment was meted out to a woman in Devigarh village in the same district of Madhya Pradesh, for allegedly having an affair with a man belonging to a different caste.

According to the data released by National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) in 21 October, 2019, Madhya Pradesh was the worst place for women with the state registering the highest number of domestic violence cases.

"In 2019, a total of 616 cases were recorded in the entire country under Domestic Violence Act, 2005. The act was meant to provide effective protection of the rights of women. Of the total cases, 241 were registered in Madhya Pradesh in 2017," according to the data.

Ex-Samata Party president Jaya Jaitley, two others get 4 years in jail for corruption in 2001 defence deal

A Delhi court Thursday awarded 4-year jail term to ex-Samata Party president Jaya Jaitley and two others for corruption in a 2000-01 case related to a purported defence deal saying they "compromised the entire defence system of the country."

Special CBI judge Virender Bhat also awarded 4-year jail term to Jaitley's former party colleague Gopal Pacherwal and Major General (rtd) S P Murgai in the case, Murgai's advocate Vikram Panwar said.

There should be zero tolerance towards corruption in defence procurement deals as these have direct bearing upon an independence and sovereignty of our country, the court said, adding that the crime committed by the convicts was of "highest degree".

The court, in an in camera proceeding, imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh each on all three convicts and directed them to surrender before it till 5 PM on Thursday itself.

The order was stayed by the Delhi High Court later in the day.

The three accused were held guilty of corruption and criminal conspiracy in the purported purchase of hand-held thermal imagers. The case stemmed from 'Operation Westend' sting aired by news portal Tehelka in January 2001.

The trial court said the convicts were no laymen but persons of status and means, and had not committed the crime due to any ignorance or lack of knowledge or under any duress.

"On the contrary, the crime was committed by them in pursuance to a well hatched conspiracy and upon due deliberations with each other," the court said, terming the crime as "very serious" and "having grave ramifications so far as the defence of our country is concerned."

The convicts took money from the representative of a fictitious firm without bothering to ascertain whether the firm was actually in operation and whether the product of the said firm sought to be inducted in the Indian Army was worth it, the court observed.

It noted that they chose to remain blindfolded on all the vital aspects of the concerned product of the fictitious firm only with a view to get some monetary enrichment.

"By their act, they compromised the entire defence system of the country. It is a crime with very wide and huge repercussion for the entire nation and thus cannot be dealt with leniently."

"For their petty gains, the convicts sought to assist the induction of a product of an unknown fictitious company into the Indian Army, which if done, would have made the Army immensely vulnerable and handicapped in the wake of an enemy attack. The very existence of our country would have come under threat," the court said, adding that it was no less than an attack on the independence of our country.

The convicts do not deserve any mercy, "they deserve harshest sentence," the court said, adding that any kind of mercy would be mockery of justice and sure to excite the fury of the society at large.

"The virus of corruption which has engulfed the entire fabric of our society, is becoming a major obstacle in the growth and development of our nation. In a democratic system, when the public offices and public institutions are misused for private advantage, they loose their legitimacy," it said.

The court said the corruption not only corrodes the social fabric of the society but also depletes the national wealth and undermines people's trust in the political system, in its institutions and in the public servants.

The court held that all the three accused, along with Surender Kumar Surekha (who later turned approver), were party to the criminal conspiracy that took place around December 2000 and January 2001 at Delhi.

The court observed that while Jaitley accepted illegal gratification of Rs 2 lakh from Mathew Samuel, a representative of fictional company Westend International, Murgai received Rs 20,000.

All the three accused - Jaitley, Pacherwal and Murgai - were convicted of the offence of conspiracy (Section 120-B IPC read with Section 9 (Taking gratification, for exercise of personal influence with public servant) of Prevention of Corruption (PC) Act.

The court held that it is "proved beyond doubt that in the meeting in the hotel room on 25 December, 2000 Surekha and Murgai assured their assistance to Samuel in procuring letter of evaluation for the product of his company from the Ministry of Defence and also to arrange a meeting between him and accused Jaya Jaitley who would provide political cover to them in this regard".

Accordingly, Pacherwal arranged the said meeting for December 28, 2000. He too was present in the said meeting in the room of Jaitley along with Surekha, Samuel and Murgai, the court observed.

The court said: "In that meeting, which took place in the official residence of the then Union Minister for Defence, George Fernandes, Samuel was introduced to Jaitly as a businessman whose company intends to enter the market of defence procurement.

"Samuel offered the sum of Rs 2 lakh to Jaitley who instructed him to handover the money to Pacherwal and accordingly, the money was received by accused Pacherwal knowing that it was bribe money.

"In lieu thereof, Jaitley assured Samuel that in case the product of his company is not considered, she would intervene by making a request to ''Sahib'' (purportedly the Defence Minister Mr. George Fernandes) to send a word to the concerned officer in this regard".

Centre's recent reforms on agri-trading give farmers more leeway to choose buyers, cut travel costs

Although some people claim that the country has broken free from the shackles of license raj, people engaged in agriculture, unfortunately, continue to face unfair restrictions. However, some reforms brought into effect by the ordinances as a part of the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat Package’ can potentially start a fresh era for farmers in India.

Firstly, the Union government has allowed direct business between farmers and private players in the market. Electronic trading platforms and setting up of private physical ‘mandis’ can help create a competitive environment for cultivators. This also attempts to undo the monopolistic approach of the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) and its state government-approved agents.

Until now, farmers were compelled to sell their produce through commission agents referred to as ‘arathiyas’ in mandis. The motive behind the creation of this system was to prevent retailers from exploiting farmers. The middlemen were supposed to be working for the benefit of the sellers.

However, the agents perhaps succumbed to political clout, which gave rise to an order through which the farmers earned very less despite paying the 0.5 percent-6 percent tax to the agent. Contrarily, the consumer paid high prices to avail the product, largely due to the commissions that were obtained by the broker.

Maharashtra earns Rs 50,000 crore annually via the taxes levied by its 305 APMC ‘mandis’. On the other hand, the Punjab government reportedly earns Rs 3,500 crore through the same practice. The states refused to comply with the Centre's exhortations to amend their respective APMC Acts and integrate the ‘mandis’ into the electronic National Agricultural Market (e-NAM).

Yet, a difficulty for the farmers in opting for eNAM is the uncertainty, as compared to the instant payments that the commission agents guarantee. Most crop producers travel a long way to reach the ‘mandis’ early in the morning and require cash for the journey back home. This prevents them from trading outside the purview of their respective APMC setups.

The new ordinance ensures that the private electronic or physical buyers have to pay the required amount to the seller on the same day or in three working days. Their refusal to do so will invite penalties ranging from Rs 25,000-Rs 5, 00,000 from the dispute resolution board.

A further reason for encouragement for farmers is that the conventional ‘mandi fee’ or tax will not be applicable if they sell their produce to these private ‘mandis’ or electronic trading platforms. Multiple such markets can emerge in areas which have only a single APMC hub. It can reduce the travelling costs borne by the growers, and offer them independence to choose the appropriate price for their products from numerous buyers.

The traders are permitted to engage in both inter-state and intra-state transactions with farmers, thus opening up wider avenues for both parties. The sole requirement for an individual or a company to set up a trading platform is the possession of a Permanent Account Number (PAN) card.

Another important development was an ordinance through which an amendment was made to the Essential Commodities Act, 1955. This Act enables the government to control production, supply and distribution of an ‘essential product’, whilst also maintaining a limit over the quantity of the item that can be stocked at one point in time.

The ECA was implemented in the decade after independence to prevent hoarding of critical commodities at a time when the country faced shortage in production. Through recent alterations, cereals, pulses, oilseeds, edible oils, potatoes and onions have been removed from the list of essential items. These commodities can now be regulated only under exceptional circumstances.

Right now, we face the issue of over-production of some of the items. Couple this with the poor storage facilities and infrastructure in rural areas and hence it potentially causes wastage of agricultural produce.

The amendment to the ECA will particularly interest private entities as they can now buy valuable items like onions, potatoes amongst others en masse, and utilize their arguably better storage amenities completely.

Furthermore, Rs 1 lakh crore, i.e. 5 percent of the government's package is devoted towards improving farm gate infrastructure, which includes better cold storage and post-harvest facilities. The ECA amendment allows the farmers to participate in both high and low inflation scenarios, thereby receiving their deserved remuneration according to the nature of the market.

Unlike the usual measures that are in the form of instant funds or loan reliefs, these measures can turn farmers into competitive businessmen.
