NVIDIA To Manufacture GPUs in India? CEO Jensen Huang discusses AI with PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a long and productive meeting with Jensen Huang, the CEO of the American semiconductor giant NVIDIA. As per a tweet by the Indian Prime Minister, the two had a deep discussion about the exciting opportunities India offers in the field of Artificial Intelligence.

Modi shared this news along with some pictures of their meeting on social media, saying, “Had a fantastic discussion with Mr. Jensen Huang, the CEO of @nvidia. We delved into the vast potential that India holds in the AI domain.”

“Mr. Jensen Huang was appreciative of the strides India has made in this sector and was equally upbeat about the talented youth of India,” PM Modi said.

NVIDIA eyeing a plant in India?
The meeting between the two has led to some serious speculation that suggests NVIDIA, the world’s foremost AI chip and GPU manufacturer may be considering opening up a manufacturing plant in India.

To be clear, NVIDIA doesn’t make its own semiconductors. It designs the GPU dies, and sets up the manufacturing process. The actual manufacturing is usually carried out by semiconductor manufacturers like TSMC.

Nvidia Corporation, founded on April 5, 1993, by Jensen Huang, Chris Malachowsky, and Curtis Priem, originally aimed to revolutionize 3D graphics for gaming and multimedia markets.

The Indian government has been very vocal about self-sufficiency or Atmanirbharta. At the same time, the government has been pushing the tech industry to manufacture the components and devices that they plan on selling in India, in the country. In such a scenario, it wouldn’t be far-fetched to imagine that NVIDIA may want to set up a manufacturing plant in India.

Furthermore, India is home to one of the largest pools of AI talent and has several software development studios and companies that are working extensively on AI.

NVIDIA’s history in India
NVIDIA has established strong connections with India over the years. They first set up operations in India back in 2004, nearly twenty years ago, with their initial base in Bangalore.

As of writing this piece, India hosts four engineering development centres, located in Gurugram, Hyderabad, Pune, and Bengaluru. This significant presence has led to the employment of over 3,800 professionals at NVIDIA in India.

Furthermore, NVIDIA has cultivated a thriving community of developers in India, with more than 320,000 developers participating in NVIDIA’s developer program based in the country.

The popularity of NVIDIA’s CUDA parallel programming platform is evident, with approximately 40,000 downloads each month in India. Additionally, it’s estimated that India boasts a substantial pool of 60,000 experienced CUDA developers. These statistics highlight the impressive impact NVIDIA has made within India’s tech ecosystem.

NVIDIA is the world’s most valuable semicon company
In terms of financial performance, Nvidia reported impressive revenue for the second quarter of 2023, reaching $13.51 billion, which is a remarkable 101 per cent increase from the previous year and an 88 per cent increase from the previous quarter.

The earnings per diluted share for the quarter were $2.48, marking an incredible 854 per cent increase from the previous year and a 202 per cent increase from the previous quarter. As a result, Nvidia’s stock recently hit an all-time high, surging by an astounding 315 per cent.

This meeting between Modi and Huang is their second encounter, underlining Nvidia’s significant role in India’s rapidly growing technology industry. It’s worth noting that this meeting took place just a week after India achieved the historic feat of successfully landing on the Moon’s south pole, showcasing the expanding technological capabilities of the world’s largest democracy.

Following the meeting with Modi, Huang had a chance to connect with numerous researchers from renowned institutions in science and technology, including the Indian Institute of Science and various Indian Institute of Technology campuses, during an informal dinner.

First litmus test for I.N.D.I.A bloc as voting underway for bypolls in 6 states for 7 assembly seats

Voting for the bypolls to the seven assembly seats of six states, including Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Kerala, Tripura, West Bengal, and Jharkhand, started on Tuesday at 7 am.

This is the first election between the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the Opposition bloc’s newly formed Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA).

Voting for bypolls is being held for Kerala’s Puthupally, Dhupguri seat in West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri, Dumri in Jharkhand and Uttarkhand’s Bageshwar, and Boxanagar and Dhanpur in Tripura.

The Election Commission will release the results of bypolls 8 September.

Bypolls in five states were necessitated due to the deaths of the sitting MLAs, while the two other MLAs resigned from their posts. In Uttar Pradesh’s Ghosi, Dara Singh Chauhan’s reelection as Samajwadi Party (SP) MLA necessitated bypolls.

Chauhan joined the BJP after leaving the SP. The BJP has filed Chauhan against SP’s Sudhakar Singh for the Ghose byelections.

Bye-election in Tripura’s Dhanpur was necessitated after the BJP’s Pratima Bhoumik resigned to retain her Lok Sabha seat, leaving the assembly vacant. Bhoumik’s brother Bindu Debnath will be fighting for the BJP against Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) candidate Kaushik Chanda in Dhanpur for the bypolls.

The BJP and CPI (M) will contest against each other in Tripura’s Boxanagar seat, which fell vacant after the death of CPI (MK) MLA Samsul Haque.

In Uttarakhand’s Bageshwar seat, the battle will be between the SP, Congress, and BJP against each other. A bye-election in Bageshwar was prompted by the death of BJP MLA Chandan Ram Dass.

Congress veteran Oomen Chandy’s death necessitated the bypolls in Kerala’s Puthupally seat. Congress has fielded Oommen Chandy’s son, Chandy Oomen, while the ruling party CPI (M) has fielded Jaick C. Thomas from this constituency.

A bypoll in Jharkhand’s Dumri was necessitated after the death of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) MLA Jagarnath Mahto. JMM has filed Mahto’s wife, Bebi Devi, who is representing the India bloc, against NDA’s Yashoda Devu and All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) Abdul Rizvi.

In West Bengal’s Dhupguri, the bye-election was necessary after the death of the BJP’s Bishnu Pada Ray. Tapas Ray from the BJP is contesting against Nirma Chandra Roy and CPI (M) candidate Ishwar Chandra Roy.

G20 Summit: Online food delivery services to be suspended from September 8 to 10

With just four days to go for the G20 Summit, authorities in Delhi have ordered the suspension of online food delivery services in the district of New Delhi from September 8 to 10 in an effort to airtight security arrangements.

However, essential services like medicine deliveries will be allowed during this period.

“Essential services such as postal and medical services, sample collections by path labs will be allowed throughout Delhi,” Special Commissioner of Police (Traffic) SS Yadav said addressing a presser.

Online deliveries from commercial sites like Amazon will also be barred during the summit.

Apart from this, public transport services like the metro will be open to commuters.

“There might be closure of gates for 10-15 minutes at stations due to VIP movement and security restrictions. But apart from at Pragati Maidan (Supreme Court), metro services will not be affected at other stations,” he added.

The Delhi Fire Service (DFS) Monday said 35 fire tenders and 500 personnel will be deployed to combat any fire-related situation during the Summit.

Delhi Fire Service (DFS) Director Atul Garg in an interview to PTI video said four special high-voltage water pumping machines have been procured to avoid any waterlogging in the Rajghat area if it rains.

“Every department is preparing for the upcoming G20 meet. DFS is considered one of the most prominent departments, and the department has prepared itself to tackle any fire incident that may take place,” Garg said.

Strict Measures: Scientists, engineers working on Aditya-L1 weren’t allowed to wear perfumes for THIS reason

Scientists and engineers at the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) in Bengaluru, who were responsible for the primary payload of the Aditya L-1 solar mission, implemented a stringent policy against the use of perfumes and sprays.

This precautionary measure was set in place due to the potentially disruptive impact that even the minutest particle could have on the crucial work being conducted on Aditya’s primary payload, called the Visible Emission Line Coronagraph or VELC.

In order to maintain an impeccably pristine environment, these dedicated professionals carried out their tasks within a highly controlled cleanroom, often referred to as a “sanctuary.”

This cleanroom maintained a level of cleanliness surpassing that of a hospital intensive care unit by a factor of 1,00,000. Furthermore, every member of the team wore specialized suits to prevent any form of contamination. Additionally, they underwent ultrasonic cleaning procedures as an extra precautionary measure, every time they entered the clean room.

Nagabushana S, the head of the VELC technical team, explained, “The cleanroom had to be maintained at a level of cleanliness 1-lakh times higher than that of a hospital ICU.”

“We used HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) filters, isopropyl alcohol (99 per cent concentrated), and rigorous protocols to ensure no foreign particles caused disruptions. A single particle discharge could have undone days of hard work,” Sanal Krishna from IIA, a member of the VELC technical team, added.

IIA’s scientists worked in six-hour shifts without even using medicinal sprays within the confines of the cleanroom, Krishna explained

It should be noted that this practice was not observed by scientists from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), as reported. In interviews conducted with three ISRO scientists, all confirmed that they were not obliged to abstain from using perfumes and deodorants while working.

However, all of them agreed and underscored the significance of upholding the cleanliness and purity of cleanrooms. One of them even speculated that perhaps the IIA scientists were taking additional precautions, as reported by the Times of India.

'Are you going to use anti-Hindu strategy in upcoming polls?' Nadda questions INDIA alliance

In a scathing response to comments made by DMK leader Udayanidhi Stalin regarding ‘Sanatan Dharma,’ BJP President JP Nadda indirectly targeted Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, accusing the “Mohabbat ki Dukan” (Shop of Love) of spreading hatred. He also raised questions about whether the leaders within the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) intend to adopt an anti-Hindu strategy in the upcoming elections.

JP Nadda also questioned whether Udayanidhi Stalin’s remarks on ‘Sanatan Dharma’ are a part of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA).

Addressing a public rally in Chitrakoot, JP Nadda said, “Stalin’s son, Udayanidhi Stalin says that ‘Sanatan Dharma’ should be abolished. He says that like dengue and malaria, ‘Sanatan Dharma’ should be abolished. They have no hesitation while making such statements. Is Udayanidhi’s statement a part of the INDIA alliance’s political strategy ?”

“Are you going to use this anti-Hindu strategy in the upcoming elections? You have proved multiple times that you hate everything related to our country and your ‘Mohabbat ki Dukan is spreading hate,” he added.

He further mentioned that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is working on making India a developed nation and on the other hand opposition is busy harming the culture of the country.

“NDA alliance is busy working to make India a developed nation under the guidance of PM Modi. Recently some members of dynastic alliance came together in Mumbai. While we are busy making a developed state this ‘Ghamandiya’ alliance is harming our culture and religion,” Nadda said.

Earlier Tamil Nadu Minister and DMK leader Udayanidhi Stalin said that Sanatan Dharma cannot be merely opposed but should be abolished.

“Few things cannot be opposed, they should only be abolished. We cannot oppose Dengue, mosquitoes, Malaria, or Corona, we have to eradicate them. In the same way, we have to eradicate Sanatana (Sanatan Dharma). Rather than merely opposing Sanatana, it should be eradicated,” DMK leader said.
