Explained: Who is Goldy Brar, detained in California, and what’s his link to the Sidhu Moose Wala murder?

Authorities have received a huge breakthrough in the Sidhu Moose Wala murder case after gangster Goldy Brar, one of the main conspirators in the crime, has been detained in California.

According to sources in India’s intelligence agencies, Goldy Brar — whose real name is Satinder Singh — was detained around 20 November. The government is involved in back-channel talks to assess Brar’s status in the US as he may have applied for asylum.

The news of Brar’s detention comes just a day after slain Punjabi singer Sidhu Moose Wala’s father Balkaur Singh had appealed to the government to announce a reward of at least Rs 2 crore for any information that leads to the arrest of the gangster, who now resides in Canada. At an event, Singh said that if the government could not pay the amount, he would do so — even if it meant that he had to sell his land.

But, who is Goldy Brar? What is his connection to the Sidhu Moose Wala murder?

The life of gangster Goldy Brar

A native of Sri Muktsar Sahib in Punjab, Brar was born in 1994 and completed his graduation. It is reported that he entered Canada on a student visa in 2017 and has been living there ever since.

It is unknown how he met gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, but according to officials, he is now a close associate of Bishnoi and operates from there through a module in Punjab.

Brar has several cases of murder, attempted murder, extortion and multiple criminal proceedings pending against him. He also reportedly runs an extortion racket in Punjab from Canada.

In October 2020, Goldy Brar’s cousin Gurlal Brar was murdered outside a disc in Chandigarh last year. Gurlal was a close aide of Bishnoi. To avenge his death, Goldy planned the murder of Youth Congress leader Gurlal Pahalwan in Faridkot.

Shortly after the killing of Pehalwan — he was shot at 13 times, including two at the back of his head and five on stomach and chest — a Facebook profile in the name of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi owned responsibility for the killing.

“We don’t want to prove anything by posting this, but we don’t want police to bother innocents. I, Bishnoi and Goldy Brar, take responsibility of killing Gurlal Pehalwan in Faridkot. We had warned Gurlal many times that he should mind his own business and do not work against us. But everyone can’t be made to understand the words and I don’t talk much, so, I had to take this step,” he had written.

Brar’s name has also been linked to the November murder of Pardeep Singh, a Dera Sacha Sauda follower. In a Facebook post in Punjabi, Brar said he murdered Pardeep as three governments couldn’t bring Singh to justice. He said whoever disrespects any religion will face the same consequences.

Pardeep was one of the accused in a case of theft of a ‘bir’ (copy) of the Guru Granth Sahib in 2015 in Faridkot and was currently on bail. He was shot dead when he was opening his dairy shop in Kotkapura.

Goldy Brar’s link to Sidhu Moose Wala murder

On 29 May, the country reeled from the news after famous Punjabi singer-turned-Congress politician Sidhu Moose Wala was gunned down by eight assailants in Mansa district.

The Punjab Police had stated that the murder appeared to be a case of inter-gang rivalry. Punjab Director General of Police VK Bhawra had then said, “This incident seems to be a case of an inter gang rivalry.” He said the name of Moose Wala’s manager Shaganpreet had figured in the murder of youth Akali leader Vicky Middukhera last year. Shagunpreet had fled to Australia.

“This murder appeared to be in retaliation of Middukhera’s murder,” the top police officer had added.

This was confirmed by Brar, who reportedly took to social media after the murder, and alleged that he and Lawrence Bishnoi had planned Moose Wala’s assassination as the singer’s name had surfaced in the murder of Akali leader Vicky Middukhera and his cousin Gurlal Brar.

As of September, the Punjab Police has arrested 23 accused in the Sidhu Moose Wala murder. Notably, total 35 people have been accused in the Moose Wala murder case out of which 23 have been arrested and two have been neutralised. The other four are out of the country and six are still absconding.

Gangster Goldy Brar, mastermind of Sidhu Moose Wala murder, detained in California

Chandigarh: Goldy Brar, gangster who mastermind the brutal murder of singer-politician Sidhu Moose Wala and linked to other incidents in Punjab, has been detained in California by the US authorities, according to reports.

There has been no confirmation received from any central agency on the detention of Goldy Brar, the Punjab Police officials said on Friday.

Notably, Satinderjeet Singh alias Goldy Brar, a member of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, recently moved to the US from Canada on a student visa in 2017.

A report by NDTV quoted sources saying that Brar was arrested around 20 November and that the Indian government is yet to get any official from the US.

The central agencies in India are in constant touch with the authorities in California to get details about Brar and his arrest.

Popularly known as Sidhu Moose Wala, Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu, was shot dead in Punjab’s Mansa district on 29 May. Later, Brar, on a Facebook post, owned killing the singer. He said that he killed Moose Wala in retaliation to the murder of youth Akali leader Vicky Middukhera, which took place in 2021.

A native of Sri Muktsar Sahib in Punjab reportedly moved to the US due to intense pressure of arrest for murdering Moose Wala and Dera Sacha Sauda follower Pardeep Singh.

A red corner notice, which allows the arrest and detention of a fugitive abroad, has been issued against Brar.

Balkaur Singh, father of Sidhu Moose Wala – had on Thursday (1 December) appealed to the Punjab government-led by Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) Bhagwant Mann to announce a reward of at least Rs 2 crore for any information that led to the arrest of Brar.

“Recently, a Punjabi man fled from Australia after murdering a woman. The Australian government announced a reward of 1 million dollars for giving information about him. Resultantly, he was arrested in six days. I pay Rs 2 crore in a year as tax to the government. Still, if the government is not able to pay such an amount as a reward, I am ready to pay it from my pocket, even if I have to sell my land for it. I just want the reward to be announced by the government,” he said.

After reports of Brar’s detention in the US, Balkaur Singh, on Friday, said that he has no confirmation and has learned about it only from media reports. “If it has happened it will be the biggest relief for the bereaved family,” he added.

How can one forget the iconic scene from the Bollywood film, 3 Idiots where the trio of Aamir Khan, Sharman Joshi, and R Madhavan gatecrashed Kareena Kapoor’s elder sister’s wedding to enjoy free food and managed to escape smartly after they were called red-handed. Well, it was quite funny in the movie but not in real life as uninvited guests at weddings are not usually welcomed. There have also been several instances when people took to social media and shared their experiences of gatecrashing weddings. However, this trick didn’t go well with a person in Bhopal who went to a wedding uninvited and ended up washing dishes after he was caught.

Yes, you’ve heard it right. The incident took place at a wedding in Bhopal where a young man arrived at a wedding to enjoy free food but was caught by the hosts, who made him wash dishes as a punishment. A video of the same has gone viral and shows the man washing dishes while people stand around him and scold him.

Check the video:

As we see in the video, the man was sitting with the dirty dishes while another person, who seemed to be related to the hosts, recorded a video and questioned the trespasser. While he begins by asking who invited the man to the wedding, he later asks the trespasser about his profession. The man responded that he is an MBA student and hails from Jabalpur.

Throughout the video, the man is instructed to wash the dishes properly. Since the clip was shared, it has grabbed the attention of many. While a lot of individuals went on to call it ‘shameless’ and ‘incorrect’ to punish someone for merely eating, some also found it quite funny. A user wrote, “What a shameful incident. Terminal Trouble: The two-hour chaos that brought Mumbai International Airport to a crawl

“Sitting in the plane for close to an hour now!! Still no clue when we will take off. Crazy chaos at Mumbai airport.”

This tweet by a flyer on Thursday in Mumbai summed up the experience of thousands of people, who were at Mumbai Airport’s T2 terminal after a network cable fault led to inordinate delays.

What exactly happened at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport? How were passengers affected? How long before services resumed normalcy? We take a closer look and give you all the answers.

Chaos unleashed

Around 6 pm on Thursday, people began to flood Twitter with complaints of complete chaos at Mumbai Airport’s Terminal 2. Passengers faced a tough time in completing the check-in process for their flights as the Internet server at the facility went down for over two hours.

Airlines had to issue boarding passes manually, leading to long queues and people getting frustrated and angry. Visuals flooded social media showing huge queues at all counters for baggage drop during the down period.

A passenger shared his experience at the airport, the second busiest after the one in Delhi, on Twitter. “Got in after waiting for close to one and half hour at the baggage drop counter,” he wrote, cautioning other passengers about flying from Mumbai on Thursday.

Another flyer claimed that the systems went down just as she was getting her bags checked-in.

Officials speak

As passengers faced a tough time at the airport, authorities from the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) said that a network interruption had caused a disruption in the ticketing systems.

“There was a network interruption resulting from a cable cut during some construction work in the city. This interrupted the various ticketing systems,” said CSMIA officials.

It is reported that the ongoing infrastructure digging work for the Mumbai Metro line in the vicinity of the airport had caused a snap in the cable of a major utility company, leading to the chaos at the airport.

It was only after 7 pm, almost two hours since the systems had gone down, that services resumed normalcy, providing passengers with some relief.

Soon after the system blackout, airport officials initiated steps to ensure least possible inconvenience to the flyers.

Vistara, Akasa Air and Air India confirmed that their services had been impacted and apologised to flyers for the inconvenience.

An Akasa Air spokesperson had confirmed that their services from Mumbai airport had been impacted. “We are assisting passengers according to their needs,” said the spokesperson.

Air India issued a statement that read: “We understand that delays are certainly uncomfortable. Our team is working diligently to minimise the inconvenience. They'll be in touch with you for further updates.”

Importance of internet at airports

Thursday’s chaotic scenes at Mumbai Airport is a reminder of how dependent airports are on the internet.

From ticketing to baggage to billing to boarding — all of these aspects and many more activities at the airport are dependent on the internet. Airports across the world depend on a combination of smart management techniques, good data analysis, and a state-of-the-art technology infrastructure.

Many aviation experts also believe that intelligent airport networks, built on strong 5G, will help revolutionise the passenger experience, as ground operations, security checkpoints, runway monitoring, baggage handling, and building management could be transformed in the near future.
