Every year, Gudi Padwa is celebrated on the first day of the Chaitra month. This year, the festival, which also heralds the start of the new year for people in Maharashtra and Goa, will be celebrated on 2 April.

Gudi Padwa is also known as Samvatsar Padvo and is the first day of the new year for the Marathi and Konkani communities. The festival also marks the onset of the spring season as well as the harvest season. Many people celebrate this auspicious day with grandeur and prepare traditional delicacies as well.

Some of the lip-smacking items that are prepared on the occasion of Gudi Padwa are basundi, shrikhand, puran poli, and modaks, among others. Here are some of the festive recipes which you can try at home for Gudi Padwa this year:

Puran Poli - Puran Poli is not just a festive dish but also a comfort food for many. The outer bread (poli) stuffed with sweet lentil filling (puran) remains a favourite for several people, especially as the preparation time is very little. The dish is extremely flavourful and leaves you want more with every bite.

Modak - Modaks are usually associated with Ganesh Chaturthi, but they can also be a part of traditional dishes on Gudi Padwa. Modaks are easy to make and you can also experiment with a variety of fillings like cashews, almonds or even chocolate to get all the celebratory feels.

Shrikhand- Shrikhand is always on the top for many people whenever a festival is near, and it certainly comes to mind while celebrating Gudi Padwa. This dessert is an integral part of Maharashtrian cuisine and is prepared on almost every special occasion. Shrikhand is a yogurt-based dessert that includes ingredients like sugar, cardamom and dry fruits.

Basundi- Basundi is very similar to rabri and it is extremely easy to prepare. This simple, yet tasty dish is bound to leave your taste buds satiated.

Happy Ugadi : Wishes and greetings to share with your family and friends on this festive day

Ugadi, also known as Yugadi or Ugadhi, marks the beginning of the new year in the southern states of India. It is an important Hindu festival that is celebrated by the people from Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana with great cheer and festivity. It also refers to the beginning of Samvastara which means starting a cycle of sixty years.

The term ‘Yugadi’ is derived from two Sanskrit words, ‘Yuga’ which means age and ‘Adi’ which means the beginning. The people of Maharashtra celebrate it by the name of ‘Gudi Parwa’. According to Drik Panchang, Ugadi is the new year as per the lunisolar calendar. Due to this, the Hindu new year is celebrated twice in one year with different names on both occasions.

According to the solar calendar, Yugadi is observed as Puthandu in Tamil Nadu, Bihu in Assam, Vaisakhi in Punjab, Pana Sankranti in Odisha and Naba Barsha in West Bengal.

According to Hindi mythology, Lord Brahma initiated the creation of the universe on this auspicious day. The very first day of Chaitra Navaratri is observed as Ugadi to mark the creation of mankind by Lord Brahma. According to another ancient tale, it is believed that Lord Vishnu had taken the avatar of Matsya on this day.

Ugadi 2022- Date and Time:

Ugadi is celebrated on the Pratipada date of Shukla Paksha which will fall on 2 April this year. Pratipada Tithi will start at 11:53 am after sunrise on 1 April and will last till 11:58 am on 2 April. As the new year is beginning on Saturday, Lord Saturn will be the lord of the new cycle.

Gudi Padwa marks the beginning of the New Year for the residents of Maharashtra and Goa. Popularly known as Samvatsara Padvo, the festival also marks the start of the harvest season for reaping rabi crops. According to the Hindu calendar, Gudi Padwa is observed by the Maharashtrian and Konkani communities on the first day of the Chaitra Navaratri, which stipulates the start of the spring season.

As per another ancient legend, the people of Paithan hoisted the Gudi Flag to embrace the victory of King Shalivahana.

On this day, people hoist the traditional Gudi flags which consist of a bright colourful cloth tied at the top of a long bamboo stick with neem and mango leaves. The Gudi flag held high is a symbol of victory with a garland of sugar candies tied at the top and a silver, copper or bronze pot arranged in an inverted manner. The Gudi flag is a reflection of life where sugar candy signifies the happy moments and neem represents the bitter experiences of life. People raise the Gudi Flag on the terrace or outside the house to achieve the strength to fight evil, bring prosperity, and good luck to the house.

Sajibu Nongma Panba: Share these wishes and messages with your loved ones on the occasion

Sajibu Nongma Panba is the traditional lunar new year for followers of the Sanamahism religion in Manipur.  This year the day falls on 2 April. The day is mostly observed on the first day of the lunar month of Sajibu, means it usually falls in the month of April, according to the western calendar.

Also known as Meetei Cheiraoba or Sajibu Cheiraoba, Sajibu Nongma Panba is marked by the Meitei people, one of the largest ethnic communities in Manipur.

Gudi Padwa 2022: All you need to know about puja time, date and muhurat

Gudi Padwa or Samvatsar Padvo will be observed on Saturday, 2 April, this year. According to the Hindu lunar calendar, Gudi Padwa is the first day of the Chaitra month. For the Marathi and Konkani communities, the day heralds the arrival of spring and marks the start of the new year.

Gudi Padwa comes from the words 'gudi', meaning flag or symbol of Lord Brahma, and 'padwa', which means the first day of the moon, which is why the festival is marked on the first day of Chaitra.

People in Karnataka, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh celebrate Gudi Padwa as Ugadi. The lively festival also marks the start of the harvest season.

The day starts with a ceremonial oil bath and prayers. According to the scriptures, taking an oil bath and eating neem leaves is considered good on this day. People decorate their house with rangolis and fresh flowers and also prepare a variety of delicacies such as puran polis, basundi etc on this day.

People also hang Gudi flags at the main entrance of their house or on a window. The flag is said to protect against evil and bring prosperity.

As per Hindu mythology, Lord Brahma created the universe on the day of Gudi Padwa. It is also believed that after creating the universe, Lord Brahma introduced days, weeks, months and years on Gudi Padwa as well. Furthermore, many people believe that the day also marks Lord Rama's coronation ceremony after defeating Ravana and returning to Ayodhya.

According to a News18 article, Anne Feldhaus, the President of the Association for Asian Studies, stated that Gudi Padwa is also linked with Lord Shiva's dance and the coming together of the community in rural Maharashtra.

Uddhav Thackeray to inaugurate two new Mumbai Metro lines on 2 April; check route, fare chart here

Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray is all set to inaugurate two new Mumbai Metro lines for public operation on 2 April. The inauguration will take place on the auspicious occasion of Gudi Padwa.

Trains on the new Mumbai Metro lines will function between Aarey and Dhanukarwadi and run at a frequency of 10-11 minutes, according to reports. According to a report in Indian Express, a total of nine rakes will operate over 150 trips. These trains, which will run between 6.00 am and 10.00 pm, have the capacity to carry more than three lakh passengers every day.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA) has also finalised the timetable for the two new lines, which will run after the inauguration on 2 April.

Currently, the MMRDA is developing a 35 km long stretch of two elevated Mumbai Metro corridors including Mumbai Metro Line 7  between Dahisar East and Andheri East and Mumbai Metro Line 2A between Dahisar and D N Nagar.

Furthermore, these two new metro lines will operate parallel on the east and west side of the suburb. According to an Indian Express report, the lines are expected to reduce congestion on the Western Express Highway.

According to a report in Free Press Journal, these are the stations on the two Metro lines:

Stations on Metro Line 7:  Aarey, Dindoshi, Kurar, Akurli, Poisar, Magathane, Devipada, Rashtriya Udyan, Ovaripada and Dahisar.

Stations on Metro Line 2A: Dhanukarwadi, Kandivali, Pahadi Eksar, Borivali West, Eksar, Mandapeshwar, Khandarpada, Upper Dahisar and Dahisar

Below are the metro fare charges:

For 0 to 3 km - Rs 10

For 3 to 12 km - Rs 20

For 12 to 18 km - Rs 30

For 18 to 24 km - Rs 40

For 24 to 30 km - Rs 50

After the 35 km long stretch is made operational, commuters will be able to travel between Dahisar and Ghatkopar without exiting the station as the two metro lines will be interconnected.

Last week, the commissioner of Metro Railway Safety gave clearance to the new routes after inspecting of the lines.
