Karnataka: Amit Shah approves cabinet expansion to accommodate disgruntled BJP leaders

Bengaluru: The decks have been cleared for the much-anticipated cabinet expansion of the Karnataka government with Union Home Minister Amit Shah giving his approval on Saturday.

The cabinet expansion of the Karnataka government is intended to accommodate disgruntled BJP MLAs such as KS Eshwarappa and Ramesh Jarkiholi with an eye on the upcoming 2023 assembly elections.

Amit Shah also chaired a key meeting with booth-level workers of the BJP in Karnataka to plan out the grassroots level preparations for the 2023 Assembly elections which are scheduled to be held in May.

Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai and other BJP leaders in the state such as Home Minister Araga Jnanendra, BJP General Secretary and state in-charge Arun Singh, National General Secretary BL Santhosh, and National Secretary CT Ravi, were also present on the occasion.

Amit Shah also slammed the Congress and alleged that former Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah withdrew cases against the now-banned Islamist outfit Popular Front of India PFI) during his tenure which lasted from 2013 to 2018.

“It was only after the BJP came to power in Karnataka that PFI was banned and the leaders of the group were arrested,” Amit said.

“Many chances have been given to JD(S)-Congress, and they have been alternating. This time, lotus will bloom in Mandya and Mysuru. We will win the majority,” he added.

Even his mother's final journey didn't steer PM Narendra Modi away from his chosen path of service before self

Muktidham, Gandhinagar: Lending a shoulder to his mother’s bier from the right side was Narendra Modi. Over the past eight years as the country’s Prime Minister, and before that for a little over 12 years as chief minister of Gujarat Modi has won plaudits from across the country and world for his good governance. But here he wasn’t the Prime Minister or the beloved leader who is celebrated in India and outside. He was just Modi, his mother Heeraba’s Narendra.

His mother’s teachings were set in stone for Modi

The emotions on PM Modi’s face were not hidden from the 50-60 people who were at the crematorium and saw him carrying his mother’s bier. Having walked through thorny thickets of adversities and challenges unscathed, this was the moment for Modi that signalled an irreparable loss. After all, in the five and a half decades of public life, if anything was personal for Modi, it was his mother. The same mother, who would inspire him with her little nuggets of wisdom that sounded simple but had a deep impact on Modi.

His mother’s passing leaves a massive void in Modi’s life

Heeraba’s ‘mukhagni’ took place at 9.22am. Present there were her eldest son Sombhai on one side and youngest son Pankaj Modi. In the middle was Narendra Modi, his mother’s favourite. The funeral pyre was engulfed by flames. It kept burning for about half an hour. Standing next to the flames was Narendra Modi, at times quietly observing the blazing pyre, and on other occasions pouring ghee into the fire. His eyes were gazing into the great emptiness; after all his mother Heeraba’s death had left a great emptiness in Narendra Modi’s life that will never be filled.

On her birthday too, Modi’s mother taught him something

The nation and the world learnt about Heeraba’s passing at around 6am on Friday after Narendra Modi tweeted about it. Even in that tweet, there was a glimpse of his deep, extraordinary relationship with his mother. There was a reference to the words that his mother had uttered on June 18, 2022, when Modi had gone to meet her in Gandhinagar on the occasion of her entering her 100th year. While blessing him, she said, “Work with sagacity, live life with purity.”

For Modi, his mother was the holy trinity

In his mother Heeraba, Narendra Modi had always perceived the presence of a trinity, embodying the journey of an ascetic, the representation of a selfless karmayogi, and a life dedicated to values. He shared these feelings about his mother with the world through his tweet on Friday. After all, it was his mother’s ascetic attitude that made Modi visit her again and again, despite becoming a hermit early in life and later a ‘pracharak’ of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) that kept him away from his family.

Modi would often come to meet his mother

His bond with his mother was special, and so, after spending two years early on traversing different parts of the country and pursuing spiritual practices he came home for one day just to get his mother’s blessings and left only to become an RSS pracharak in a few years. His mother wasn’t highly educated, but she frequently passed on to him the wisdom inherent in the societal and cultural values of India. Bringing up her children amid a myriad of challenges, she always impressed upon them the importance of serving society.

The inspiration to fight corruption came from his mother

When Modi became the chief minister of Gujarat for the first time on October 7, 2001, he went to get his mother’s blessings. The first thing she told him was, “Son, never ever take a bribe.” Heeraba’s son Narendra has always had this in mind because of which he has made efforts since then to provide graft-free governance first in Gujarat and then in the country, from bringing in necessary laws to introducing direct benefit transfer, in a bid to kick out corruption. Inspired by his mother’s wise words, as chief minister he gave the famous slogan, “Na khaataa hun, naa khaane deta hun.”

The lesson to prioritise public good over personal grief

Another lesson from his mother has always motivated Narendra Modi. To spend all the time one has in the service of people, focusing on their happiness rather than being stuck in the mire of personal sorrows. He remembered this lesson even on the day of her death, when he learnt about her passing in the morning. On learning about his mother’s demise, Modi immediately left for Ahmedabad from Delhi, and kept the whole affair a private matter.

Even on mother’s death, modi didn’t cancel govt engagements

Usually, when a family member of a leader dies, the occasion is used to further their political agenda, and supporters and cadres are gathered in large numbers. But the situation in Modi’s case was very different. Apart from a few ministers, some senior leaders from Gujarat BJP, and a handful of friends from the pracharak days, everyone else was asked not to come. If Modi hadn’t sent out a message, there would have been a flood of leaders and workers from across the country on the occasion. After all, who doesn’t want to stand beside their leader in such a moment of grief?

Modi lost his father in 1988

For Modi, such matters remain a private affair. He was on Kailash-Mansarovar Yatra in 1988, learnt about his father’s ill health on returning, went to meet him, and after seeing his son one last time his father breathed his last. The very next day Modi left home to fulfill his responsibilities as pracharak towards his organisation, country, and society.

Even during his mother’s illness, Modi kept working

It was the same this time. Hearing about his mother’s condition, the PM came to Ahmedabad on the afternoon of 28 December. Heeraba’s health was frail, after all, she was in her 100th year. But after enquiring to his mother about her health, Narendra Modi returned to Delhi, to fulfil his responsibilities as Prime Minister. After all, a country of 130 crore people made him Prime Minister twice with unprecedented support and Modi understands the gravity of that. How could his personal issues and sorrows overshadow his public duties when his mother taught him to put society before self?

Modi also learnt to dedicate himself to his duties from Sardar

Modi had also learnt this lesson from his hero Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. His statue, the world’s tallest, near Sardar Sarovar Dam in Kevadia, Gujarat, as well as his life give this message. Few would remember that when Sardar Patel was practising as a renowned criminal lawyer in Gujarat, his wife passed away in 1909. While arguing in court, Sardar had received a telegram informing him about this. But he kept it in his pocket and continued strongly arguing for his client. When the hearing concluded for the day, the judge and everyone else in court learnt about this, and everyone was left astounded.

Modi was back at work shortly after the last rites

The dedication that Sardar displayed towards his duties was visible in Modi on Friday. He reached his brother Pankaj Modi’s house in Raysan area at around 8.15am on Friday to perform pushpanjali for his mother. But even before reaching Ahmedabad, Modi had decided he wouldn’t cancel any of his government engagements for the day. Even if he wouldn’t be able to make it to the actual venue of a public programme because of his mother’s death, he would participate through videoconferencing. Any other leader would have called off public programmes not just for the day but the next few days, and no one would have complained. But Modi is different.

A moist-eyed goodbye to his mother

Modi didn’t spend a lot of time at his brother Pankaj’s home. He brought his mother’s body to the crematorium in sector-30, Gandhinagar, which he had got fixed up as chief minister between 2002 and 2007. Heeraba’s body was taken out of the vehicle at the gate and lent a shoulder to bring her to the pyre kept ready inside. The body was placed on the pyre and ‘mukhagni’ was performed. With teary eyes, Heeraba’s son Narendra Modi bid her farewell. It was the last time he was seeing her in the flesh, as after that only memories remain.

In the presence of a handful of people, Modi performed last rites

After about half an hour, Modi signalled to the state ministers and senior leaders from the party to leave. After all, why should the work of his fellow public representatives be impeded because of his personal tragedy. Already beforehand he had asked most of his colleagues and ministers not to come to the crematorium. According to reports, apart from BJP leaders, central ministers and chief ministers from the party, even several CMs from rival parties wanted to be present at the funeral of the PM’s mother. But they were turned down.

The mother’s teachings will be constant companions

Heeraba’s pyre kept burning for about an hour, but only 25-30 people were present for the final half hour including some relatives and close associates, while everyone else had been asked to leave from Modi’s side. Moments of sorrow can overcome years of bitterness, and this became evident to the people when Modi’s once-party colleague turned rebel in 1995 Shankersinh Vaghela had arrived at the crematorium long before Heeraba’s body had reached there. When Modi arrived, they shared a moment, and Vaghela said, “Whenever we met, I’d ask you about your mother’s health. What would I ask now?”

Modi quietly stood next to his mother’s pyre

The thought must have arisen in Modi’s mind that who can compensate for the loss of the mother’s affectionate shade? After all, no one can replace one’s mother. These thoughts must have been swirling in Modi’s mind as while pacing around he would on several occasions stand quietly next to the pyre, staring into the flames. For the few people present, this was a glimpse of Modi’s persona as the teary-eyed son of Heeraba, stripped of all the razzamatazz of being the country’s Prime Minister in those moments.

Carried on public engagements from Raj Bhavan in Gandhinagar

Perhaps staring at his mother’s pyre once again reminded Modi of her teachings to not spend his time trying to address his own grief and concerns but resolve the problems of the people. Because of this, having reached the crematorium with his mother’s body at 9.08am, Modi left for the nearby Raj Bavan at about 10.10am from where he would participate in several public engagements through videoconferencing. The simplicity on display while visiting his mother was also palpable during her final journey, as instead of a massive cavalcade fit for a PM, Modi arrived at the crematorium with just one vehicle. It was the same as he was with his mother during his journey from CM to PM: no pageantry, no VIP culture.

Prioritising public need over personal pain was the message

It is difficult to believe that the son who was standing next to his mother’s pyre just a few minutes ago, was then as PM launching a Rs 7,800-crore project to address the fundamental needs of the people of West Bengal through videoconferencing. This is what makes Modi extraordinary, and it’s this extraordinariness that made his mother Heeraba proud of him, and now she will continue to inspire him through the mind’s eye.

A lover of ice cream, hardworking and ‘Dossi Maa’ to children: Narendra Modi’s mother Hiraben’s life and legacy

“A glorious century rests at the feet of God… In Maa, I have always felt that trinity, which contains the journey of an ascetic, the symbol of a selfless Karmayogi and a life committed to values.”

With these words on Twitter, Prime Minister Narendra Modi bid adieu to his mother, Hiraben, who passed away on Friday morning (30 December) at the UN Mehta Institute of Cardiology and Research Centre in Ahmedabad. The 100-year-old had been admitted to the hospital on Wednesday after her health had deteriorated.

Catch all the live updates from Prime Minister Modi’s mother’s death HERE

Politicians, leaders and people from all walks of life quickly grieved the loss of Prime Minister Modi’s mother Hiraben, also called Hiraba.

As the country mourns the loss of Hiraba, let’s take a look at the woman who moulded Narendra Modi into the man he is and the close ties the mother-son shared even though they lived away from each other.

Hiraba’s life an inspiration to Modi

Hiraben was born in Visnagar in Gujarat’s Mehsana district in 1923. Prime Minister Modi has stated in an earlier blog post that Hiraba’s childhood was one of poverty and deprivation.

Records show that as a teen was she married to Damodardas Mulchand Modi and moved to the town of Vadnagar a few kilometres away. Her marital house in Vadnagar was tiny, which did not have a window nor a toilet or a bathroom.

During a 2015 event in Menlo Park in the United States, Modi recalled all the hardships that his mother had to endure — washing utensils in neighbours’ homes to bring up her children. He was quoted as saying then: “When we were small, in order to make ends meet, my mother would wash utensils in neighbours’ homes. She used to clean the dishes, fill water, work as a labourer; you can imagine what a mother had to do to raise her children, the difficulties she went through.”

Modi has credited Hiraba for several principles that he has advocated for as prime minister. His push for cleanliness — Swachch Bharat — comes from his mother’s teachings and her daily activities. In a blog to celebrate her 100th birthday, Modi had written, “Her focus on cleanliness is evident. Whenever I go to Gandhinagar to visit her, she offers me sweets with her own hands. And just like a young child’s doting mother, she takes out a napkin and wipes my face once I finish eating. She always has a napkin or small towel tucked into her saree.”

Modi had also stated that it was his mother’s small efforts had taught him concepts such as ‘water conservation’. “During the rains, our roof would leak, and the house would flood. Mother would place buckets and utensils below the leaks to collect the rainwater. Even in this adverse situation, mother would be a symbol of resilience. You will be surprised to know that she’d use this water for the next few days. What better example than this of water conservation! (sic),” he had written about Hiraba.

Hiraba was also known for her large-heartedness. An instance of her generosity was when Hiraben took in Modi’s friend’s son Abbas into their home, after the boy’s father’s untimely death. “He stayed with us and completed his studies. Mother was as affectionate and caring towards Abbas just like she did for all of us siblings. Every year on Eid, she used to prepare his favourite dishes,” Modi had said about his mother in the past.

Prahlad Modi, Narendra Modi’s younger brother, had also described his mother as loving and compassionate to all. In an India Today report, he spoke of how despite not finishing her studies, she would treat small children and females in the area with home remedies. “My mother knew so many desi nuskhe. She was known as Dossi Maa. Even though she never went to school, she was a doctor in our village,” he was quoted as telling India Today.

He also revealed that his mother was extremely fond of ice cream and could never resist it.

Shied away from limelight

Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the past has described Hiraben as a simple woman, who also never had had high aspirations for Modi, and had said that even if he had landed an ordinary job, she would have been equally happy.

As Modi climbed the political ladder and became a prominent figure, his mother shied away from the cameras and didn’t attend public event with her son.

There are only two instances when she attended events with her son; the first was when she attended a function in Ahmedabad and applied tilak on Modi’s forehead after his return from Srinagar.

The other instance was when her son first took oath as the chief minister of Gujarat in 2001.

Even when Modi was sworn in as prime minister in 2014, she was absent at the event and visited him in Delhi only two years later. Modi had then tweeted images of himself with her at the official residence — 7 Race Course Road (RCR).

However, over the years, Modi has made it a point to visit her on his birthday and seek her blessings.

As her son worked tirelessly for the nation, she stayed away from the Capital and the politics but she often made news for her acts.

Despite her age, she always made it a point to vote. In the recently-concluded Gujarat Assembly elections, where her son’s party rode to a stunning victory, she had reached the polling booth in Raysan village, near Gandhinagar on a wheelchair with the help of family members and exercised her democratic right. No guesses, who she voted for though.

In November 2016, she had once again made headlines as the then 95-year-old had queued up outside a bank to exchange her notes as part of the nationwide demonetisation exercise.

Hiraben opted to remain in Gujarat with Narendra Modi’s younger son — a move that invited several questions, with even the Opposition training their guns at the prime minister, alleging that he didn’t care for her.

In April 2019, when asked why she stayed away from him despite their loving relationship, Modi had said, “My mother says what will I do at your home. What will I talk to you about? She also gets upset seeing me return late in the night.”

Say what you may, but the love between the prime minister and his mother was evident and that the two shared a bond unlike any other.

Twitter user cautions internet about human extinction, shares 'special' cartoon

A debate continues to remain around us for decades about mass extinction and whether the human species are the next to vanish from the planet, thanks to the uncontrolled population, overexploitation of natural resources, and the constant attitude of negligence towards the environment. Headlines often suggest that extinction is imminent if the ongoing menace of the climate emergency continues. Notably, there are several reasons why this may happen, however, we humans continue to remain resistant to the thought of perishing someday, due to a belief that humankind is widespread, abundant, and effectively adaptable.

While scientists on one hand continue to caution people about the risks of getting extinct, a Twitter post has now highlighted the same with the help of a simple yet effective cartoon.

Shared by Indian Forest Officer Parveen Kaswan on Twitter, the cartoon shows a human standing on the top of a structure, seemingly hinting toward the food chain. While representing that humankind has become the dominant species above all, the structure further shows creatures including birds, animals, insects, and other living organisms, and also some natural environmental factors surviving beneath humans.

Check:

While the post shows the human making an ignorant remark “Why care if species go extinct?”, the IFS officer further added an alarming caption that reads, “In every earlier mass extinction the dominant species got extinct foremost.”

The post is indeed a good way to create awareness about the issue and as intended, it did grab the attention of many people. Users took to the comment section and shared their reactions over the same.

A user wrote, “Minimalism and antinatalism is a requirement of our generation”, while another person highlighted the issue and wrote, “Because we are too lazy to look at other data. We are always satisfied to just check the superlative. most, least, first, last nothing else.”

“Nature’s way! Interesting to see who is the next dominant, and how they’d evolve and impact the Earth thereafter,” a third user wrote.

As soon as the post was shared, it amassed several reactions from people.

Dense fog affects airline operation in several cities; check out DGCA rules on delayed, cancelled flights

Since winter has arrived in India, disruption in flight operations has been reported from a number of major cities, especially in Delhi and other northern regions. Dense fog is affecting visibility, resulting in delays and cancellations of flights and a lot of hassle for passengers. The matter got worse during Christmas week as tourists had to face trouble with flight departures at the Delhi airport. Amid this scenario, travellers who are not aware of the cancellation policy, are worried about getting a refund for their ticket. However, everything regarding the matter has been clarified in the rule book regarding the rights of passengers flying within the country, released by the Ministry of Civil Aviation in August 2019.

DGCA regulations for cancelled flights:

  • If a flight is delayed by more than six hours, the airline is required to notify passengers of the revised timing at least 24 hours before the scheduled departure time. They are further mandated to provide them with a choice between a full refund and a replacement flight. Additionally, if a flight departs between 8 pm and 3 am and is delayed for more than six hours, customers should be allowed a complimentary stay.
  • The traveller will be provided with free hotel accommodations in the instance of a delay of more than 24 hours.

Based on the “block time” (the period between the departure of a flight from the gates and arrival at the destination gates) of each flight, airlines must also offer meals and refreshments to passengers if delays last longer than a specific period of time. Here are the rules depending on different block times:

  • Customers have the right to refreshments if a flight has a block time of two and a half hours and is delayed by two hours or more.
  • For flights with a block time from two and a half to five hours, the delay must be at least three hours long in order for the passenger to be entitled to refreshments.
  • If a flight does not fit into any of these two categories, the delay must last for more than four hours in order for the airline to provide refreshments.

DGCA regulations for cancelled flights:

Airlines are required to notify customers of the cancellation at least two weeks prior to the departure time. They should also give passengers a refund or arrange another flight at the same time. The airline company must compensate the passenger with remuneration ranging from Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000 if they fail to warn them at least 24 hours prior to the scheduled departure time. The same applies if a passenger misses a connecting flight registered on the same ticket, following a delay in the previous flight.

Claiming process:

Customers can request reimbursement by bringing up the issue with the airline’s nodal officer. In the case of cash payment, the refund must be done immediately, while individuals who have paid via credit card should wait for seven days for the amount to be credited to their account.

Passengers must upload all essential documentation when making their claims to prevent any complications in the process. The Ministry of Civil Aviation’s AirSewa portal offers a method for online reporting and tracking of complaints regarding airports, flights, and other aviation-related issues. Thus, customers can track their issues easily by registering on the portal.

Delhi's temperature breaks Dharamshala, Dehradun's record

New Delhi: Delhi on Monday was colder than Dharamshala and Dehradun as cold wave continued in the national capital.

On Monday, the maximum temperature at Safdarjung, Delhi’s official observatory, was recorded at 15.6 degrees Celsius, six degrees below normal, while the minimum was 5 degrees Celsius, three degrees below normal.

The temperature in Dharamshala was 18 degrees and 5.4 degrees Celsius, while that in Dehradun was 23.2 degrees and 7.8 degrees Celsius.

Delhi shivered under a “severe” cold day on Monday, when the maximum temperature dropped 10 notches below normal at some places.

On Tuesday, Safdarjung logged a minimum temperature of 5.6 degrees Celsius — a notch below normal. The maximum temperature is predicted to settle around 16 degrees Celsius.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted cold day, severe cold day conditions in Delhi on Monday.

Meteorologists attributed the sharp drop in day temperatures to frigid north westerly winds barrelling through the plains and reduced sunshine due to foggy weather.

According to the IMD, “very dense” fog is when visibility is between 0 and 50 metres, 51 and 200 metres is “dense”, 201 and 500 “moderate”, and 501 and 1,000 “shallow”.

The weather department had also predicted dense to very dense fog in Delhi and nearby regions.

“Due to prevailing light wind and high moisture in lower tropospheric levels, Dense to Very Dense Fog very likely to continue over some parts of Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi and West Rajasthan during the next 48 hours,” the IMD said on Monday.

Delhi on Sunday recorded a minimum temperature of 5.3 degrees Celsius while most parts of northern India, witnessed temperatures in a range between 3 degrees Celsius to 7 degrees Celsius, said IMD on Monday.

Delhi clocked a top wind speed of 15 kilometers per hour (kmph) on Monday. Winds gusting up to 16 kmph are likely on Tuesday.

A “severe” cold wave is when the minimum temperature dips to two degrees Celsius or the departure from normal is more than 6.4 degrees Celsius.
