BSF Raising Day: History, significance and all you need to know

India’s first line of Defence, Border Security Force (BSF), celebrates its Raising Day on 1 December every year. BSF was established on 1 December 1965 for ensuring security on the borders of India. Currently, BSF comprises 2.65 lakh personnel, deployed across the international border in 193 battalions. BSF plays a crucial role in containing unauthorized entry into or exit from the territory of India and it prevents transborder crimes. It also works towards stopping illegal activities such as smuggling. BSF strives to promote a sense of security in people living in the border areas. When the earthquake occurred in Gujarat on 26 January 2001, BSF was the first one to reach out for helping distressed individuals.

History

Pakistan attacked Sardar Post, Beria Bet, and Chhar Bet in Kutch on 9 April 1965. So, the Government of India decided to establish a specialised centrally controlled Border Security Force (BSF) which would be trained and armed for battling Pakistan on the international border. After the recommendations of the Committee of Secretaries, BSF was formed on 1 December 1965. Khusro Faramurz Rustamji was the first chief and founding father of this force.

Significance

Here are some of the important roles that BSF has played:

BSF played a crucial role in defending the integrity of India during the Kargil war from May to July 1999.
BSF contributes its personnel for services in the United Nations (UN) mission each year.
BSF personnel helped in restoring brotherhood and amity among people during the communal disturbances in Gujarat.
Internal Security Duty is being performed by the BSF personnel in Manipur and they have been fighting insurgency in those areas for the last 2 years.
The erection of the border fencing in Jammu and Kashmir was taken over by the BSF and it successfully completed the task while Pakistan was trying to create hurdles.
Celebration

This year, BSF will be celebrating its raising day for the first time in Punjab and second time outside Delhi. The rehearsal for the commemoration is going on in full-swing at Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU), Amritsar.

Rivaba Jadeja, well recognised as the wife of India’s star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, has kicked off a new innings of her life in Indian politics. The 31-year-old has been nominated as a candidate by the Bharatiya Janata Party for next month’s Gujarat assembly election. The ruling government replaced its sitting MLA Dharmendrasinh Jadeja aka Hakhuba with Rivaba for the Jamnagar North Constituency. Since joining BJP back in March 2019, Rivaba has participated in many ground-level activities in her area, especially for women.

Meanwhile, a big name in Indian cricket, Ravindra Jadeja, congratulated her wife for earning the ticket and thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for keeping trust in her competency. The cricketer was spotted several times accompanying Rivaba in election campaigns. On 25 November, he conducted a road show to campaign for his spouse.

Here, we will take a look at some lesser-known facts about Rivaba Jadeja:

  • The only child of businessman Hardev Singh Solanki and Prafullaba Solanki, Rivaba is a Mechanical Engineering graduate from Rajkot’s Atmiya Institute of Technology and Science. Her family has been involved in politics for a long time as her uncle Hari Singh Solanki was a well-known Congress leader.
  • The Jadeja couple got married on 17 April 2016 in a private ceremony in Rajkot in the presence of only relatives and close friends. A year later, they were blessed with a girl child, Nidhyana.
  • Rivaba took part in the 2018 nationwide protest against Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film Padmavaat featuring Deepika Padukone. With her participation, she caught the attention of the BJP and was appointed as the head of the women’s wing of Karni Sena.
  • In 2018, Rivaba was involved in a controversy after running her car into the bike of a police constable near her house in Jamnagar. She lodged a complaint against the constable saying that he allegedly assaulted her. The constable also accused Raviba of rash driving but failed to provide any evidence.
  • Rivaba is quite popular among locals for actively taking part in social activities and charity work. In August this year, the Prime Minister lauded Rivaba after she contributed to opening 101 Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana accounts through the Shree Matrushakti Charitable Trust, an NGO she co-founded with her husband.

Viral video: Woman cop performs traffic duty while carrying baby in arms

For several years now, working mothers have been known for juggling their personal and professional responsibilities, further giving their best efforts to fulfill every duty. While many women have to leave behind their newborn babies and small kids with families or at daycare centres, a woman in Uttar Pradesh’s Moradabad was recently seen carrying out both of her challenges together. A video going viral on social media shows a woman performing her duty at the traffic signal and also carrying her baby in her arms.

Shared on Twitter by a user named Siraj Noorani, the video proves that a mother can do anything. It shows the female officer standing at the traffic point and facilitating traffic movement while also carrying her baby by mounting her in front of her body with a carrier.

The user also added a caption that read, “No one like mother. Viral video from Moradabad.”

Check out:

The video was widely shared and people were seen raising concerns for the woman and the baby. One wrote, “The government should study and find a solution so that women do not have to work like this. People should also share the measures with the government.” Another user further commented, “On the basis of human sensitivity, the police department should be assigned her duty at some other place, so that the child does not suffer any kind of harm and if he stays away from the polluted environment, it would be good.”

While this video does look concerning, especially considering the baby’s well-being, however, as soon as the video was posted, Moradabad Police in an immediate response to the tweet said that the female constable was deployed for a brief period on 24 November 2022 and later was shifted to the police station office. It further also added that she is presently on duty at the office itself.

Notably, this is not the first time that such a video has surfaced on the internet. Earlier, another similar video surfaced from Chandigarh where a female police officer was seen standing at the traffic signal performing her duty while her baby was attached to her with a carrier in the same way.

Chhattisgarh: 17-year-old porn addict rapes and kills 10-year-old neighbour, hangs body to make it look like suicide

Raipur: A heinous crime came to fore in Chhattisgarh’s Bemetara where a 17-year-old boy watched porn for hours and allegedly raped a 10-year-old girl who lived next door. The youth then killed the minor and hanged her body from a rod in her house.

Hanged body to make it look like suicide

The gut wrenching crime took place on 26 November in a village about 90 kilometre from Raipur.

The accused sneaked into the girl’s house from the terrace when she was alone and her parents were out at work.

After allegedly sexually assaulting the child, he killed her and hanged from a bamboo rod, making it look like a suicide or an accidental hanging, investigators said.

The police caught the youth lying after they realised that the girl could not have reached that high to tie a knot.

The accused, during the questioning, allegedly confessed to the crime, Bemetara district additional superintendent of police (Addl SP) Pankaj Patel said.

The girl’s autopsy report also revealed marks on her body that indicated that she had tried to fight back.

Youth addicted to watching porn

Pankaj Patel said that the accused confessed to the police that he was addicted to watching porn on his mobile.

“On Saturday (26 November), after watching porn, the accused barged into the girl’s house when she was alone and sexually assaulted her”, Patel said.

The senior cop further said fearing that the girl would tell her parents about the assault, the boy strangled her with a scarf. “Before leaving, he also hung her lifeless body in the house to pass off her death as a suicide,” the police said.

The accused then placed a chair next to the hanging body to show as if the girl hanged herself while playing.

After hanging her body, the accused laid her one-year-old sibling on the floor so that its cries would draw the neighbours, police said.

He then escaped from her house via the terrace. Later, he stepped out onto the street where he began gathering people from the neighbourhood saying that a baby was bawling in the locked home, investigators said.

The neighbours then alerted the girl’s parents who rushed back from work and saw their daughter hanging. They then filed a complaint at the local police station.

Police said that a case has been registered under sections 450 (house trespass), 376 (rape), 376 AB (rape of woman under twelve years of age), 302 (murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence) of the IPC and provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offence (POCSO) Act relating to penetrative sexual assault.

Who did Israel's Consul General Kobbi Shoshani call first to say 'sorry'?

Mumbai: The debate over “The Kashmir Files” will strengthen relations between India and Israel, Israel’s Consul General to Midwest India Kobbi Shoshani said on Tuesday while distancing himself and the state from filmmaker Nadav Lapid’s remarks on the film.

Shoshani, who shared the dais with actor Anupam Kher at a press conference here, said the “The Kashmir Files” is not propaganda but a “strong movie” that gives place to sufferings of the people of Kashmir.

“The first person I called in the morning was Anupam Kher, my friend, just to apologise. Apologise about a speech that was a private opinion. (Lapid’s remarks) have nothing to do with the state of Israel, officially and unofficially,” Shoshani told reporters.

On Monday evening, he put out a Twitter post saying he shared a different opinion than Lapid on the film and had told him so after the comments at the closing ceremony of the International Film Festival of India in Goa.

Lapid, viewed as an anti-establishment filmmaker, had described “The Kashmir Files” as “propaganda movie” and “vulgar” on Monday night. He was chairperson of the international competition jury at IFFI.

Written and directed by Vivek Agnihotri, “The Kashmir Files” portrays the exodus of Kashmiri Hindus from Kashmir following the killings of people from the community by Pakistan-backed terrorists. The much discussed film, which polarised opinions following its March 11 release, is one of the most successful Hindi films of the year.

Man tries unique 'shower trick' to wash hair, internet hails 'Jugaad'

The internet is a place where we find all kinds of content, starting from a range of informative, innovative, creative as well as funny ones.

Users on a regular basis post multiple videos and pictures on social media. While some of the videos are entertaining and informative, some videos also show easy tricks for our day-to-day lives which look simple but are quite effective. One such video has recently popped up on the internet where a man can be seen trying out a unique ‘shower’ trick to clean his hair while shampooing.

While the technique looks quite innovative, it is also hilarious at the same time. Shared on Twitter by a user named Roma Balwani, the video shows a man sitting with his head lowered into a small tub as he cleans his hair with shampoo. But there was something else in the video that looked more interesting.

The man had a small yellow-coloured water drum tied to his back which he was smartly using to pour water on his head without even touching it. The drum was tied to the man’s back in such a manner that whenever he would raise his back a bit, the water would automatically come out and further wash away the foam from his head.

Well, what’s more interesting is that all the water is being collected in the tub kept in front of the man.

Take a look:

We Indians will definitely call it a ‘c’ as did the user in her caption. “On a lighter note on a Sunday morning! Couldn’t resist sharing this forward! Simple, innovative, cost-effective and it works! Jugaad!”, she wrote.

Since it was shared, people took to the comment section and shared their reactions. While one wrote, “jugaad is not innovation!”, another person suggested that the man could have used a mug. A third user wrote, “I just love the juggad!”

So far, the video has grabbed over 15,000 views and the numbers keep increasing.

Meanwhile, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a sudden drop in temperature can be recorded in many areas in the next few days.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has expressed the possibility of rain along with snowfall in the hilly areas today. According to the IMD, today there are chances of rain with snowfall in the mountains of Gilgit-Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, Ladakh, Jammu-Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

Several regions in the Himalayas have been receiving sporadic snowfall and rain for the past several days, due to which a major drop in temperature has been recorded in the entire region. In many areas, the mercury has fallen and reached beyond zero i.e. minus. Therefore, people in these areas are facing a lot of problems.

Along with this, the effect of snowfall on the mountains is also visible in the plains. Cold has started increasing in the plain states. A steady decrease in temperature is being seen in many parts of the country including Delhi-NCR, North, Central India. According to IMD, due to the cold winds coming from the mountainous regions, cold has increased in many states including Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and there is every possibility of further increase in cold in the coming days.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), during the next one week, the minimum temperature in Delhi-NCR will be around 8 degree Celsius. During this, the cold will increase further at night, while people will continue to get relief from the cold due to strong sunlight during the day. Also, MID says that cold wave may arrive in Delhi-NCR by mid-December. Along with this, this year’s cold can break many of its records.

The reason for the change in weather is the cyclonic circulation formed in South India. There is a possibility of rain in many parts of the south for the next few days. The clouds going to that side from the Bay of Bengal have mixed with the icy winds coming from the Himalayas. The temperature has increased due to the meeting of cold winds with sea clouds.

The rainy season is still going on in many states of the south. In this series, the Meteorological Department has expressed the possibility of rain in many places including Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Puducherry, Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

A fresh cyclonic circulation is likely to emerge over North Andaman Sea. This will change the weather of the surrounding area. Also, MID says that the minimum temperature of Odisha will decrease by three to five degrees in the next four to five days.

According to private weather forecasting agency Skymet Weather, light to moderate rain is expected over Tamil Nadu, Coastal Karnataka, South Interior Karnataka, Kerala, Lakshadweep, Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Whereas the weather will remain dry in the rest of the country. While there is a possibility of fog in the Gangetic plains in the morning and evening.

Rape attempt, a murder, and refrigerated body parts: A horrific crime from East Delhi unravels

As the country continues to reel from gruesome details emerging from the murder of Shraddha Walkar at the hands of Aftab Poonawala, the news of a similar murder has emerged from east Delhi on Monday, sending shockwaves throughout the country.

The Delhi Police Crime Branch arrested a woman and her son from Pandav Nagar for allegedly murdering her husband, Anjan Das, chopping his body into 10 pieces, and keeping them in a fridge before dumping them across the Capital.

The woman, identified as 48-year-old Poonam Devi, and her son Deepak, 25, have been arrested for the alleged murder and hiding evidence. The police are now investigating the crime, which shares eerily similar details to that of the Shraddha Walkar murder.

In police custody, Poonam has revealed that the murder was a result of Das’ drinking habits and also because he had allegedly tried to tried to molest and rape his step-daughter and daughter-in-law.

‘Ill-intentions towards my children’

The authorities investigating the case have stated that Das, 45, who worked as a lift operator temporarily was murdered at the hands of his wife and step-son Deepak on 30 May following which they chopped his body into multiple pieces, packed it in different packets and over the course of the next few days disposed of the pieces, one by one.

In early June, the Pandav Nagar police found a plastic bag with a human leg from Ramlila ground. Not far away another bag was recovered with a thigh.

Finally, on Sunday after months, the Delhi Police’s Crime Branch cracked the murder with the arrest of Deepak and Poonam. While Deepak is a part-time waiter, Poonam works in the nursing department of a hospital.

During investigations, Poonam told the authorities that the murder came after she learnt that Das had stolen her jewellery and money and then sent it to his first wife’s children in Bihar. She also told the cops that she hatched the plan to kill Das after her daughter-in-law and 22-year-old divorced daughter complained that Das had groped them and tried to rape them.

“Das tried to molest and rape them. Poonam and Deepak got very frustrated and angry due to his lecherous habits. So, in April, she along with her son Deepak hatched the conspiracy to kill him,” Special CP, Crime, Ravindra Singh Yadav, was quoted as saying by The Print.

Confirming the police’s claims, Poonam said, “Anjan molested my children and that is why he was killeḍ. My son Deepak murdered him not me.”

Deepak’s wife recounted how Das would keep harassing her and kept trying to rape her. “He would get Deepak drunk and then in in lieu of dropping him home, he would grope me. He would wait for my husband to fall asleep and then try to disrobe me. He would hold me against the walls and cover my mouth. This went on for months,” she was quoted as telling The Print.

Deepak’s sister also alleged that Das kept harassing her. “He wouldn’t leave a chance to grope me. He would push himself on me. I told my mother and brother about it. It was torture.”

Murder most foul

Fed up of Das’ alcoholism and lecherous ways, Deepak and his wife had shifted out of their joint family residence in Trilokpuri.

Deepak’s wife and sister, speaking to The Print, said that the family tried to reason with Das but he wouldn’t listen which led to Deepak and Poonam hatching a conspiracy to kill him.

According to the police, the plan to murder Das was made in April and then on 30 May they put their plan into action.

The police state that the mother-son duo used sleeping pills to sedate Das, and once he fell unconscious, slit his neck. They then allegedly left the body in the house for an entire day so that the blood could be drained out. After this, they chopped the body in 10 pieces and discarded a few over the next couple of days.

They cleaned the floor with phenyl, and whitewashed the house in Trilokpuri to wipe out evidence of the crime, the authorities added. The duo also used perfumes and room fresheners while they stored the body in the house.

Speaking at a press conference, DCP Goel said: “On 5 June, some body parts were recovered in Ramlila Maidan in the East district. Over the next three days, two legs, two thighs, a skull and a forearm were recovered, and a case was filed. Efforts were then made to identify the body. It seemed like a gruesome murder. Our team checked CCTVs again and again. Door-to-door verification was conducted but nothing was found. However, the team continued to look. During the exercise, the team found that the deceased could be a man named Anjan Das.”

“Further investigation revealed that Das had been missing for the last five-six months and there was no missing complaint filed by the family. This created suspicion in our minds and Poonam and son Deepak were picked up. They confessed to his murder upon questioning. We also found footage of them walking towards different areas after the incident,” said Goel.

A love story gone wrong

The cops probing the case have found that Poonam originally hailed from Jharkhand. At the age of 13, she was married off to a man and the next year had a daughter with him.

However, her first husband left her and went to Delhi. She came here looking for him, but was unable to locate him.

Soon, she met a man named Kallu and moved in with him after tying the knot with him. She gave birth to a son, including Deepak, and two more daughters. Kallu later died of liver failure.

She then met Anjan Das and the two got married in 2017. She told the authorities that in the last three years, Das had stopped doing any work and dependent on her for living expenses.

If things weren’t bad enough, Poonam then found out last year that Das had been selling her jewellery and stealing the money she had saved and sending it to his first wife and their eight children back in Bihar.

Put all these pieces together and it’s a recipe for an almost perfect murder.

The north east monsoon performance over the last week has been largely disappointing in terms of the rainfall performance, following the trend – upcoming week is most likely to be another less performing in terms of rainfall activities.

The low pressure areas from the bay of bengal which are termed as the core driver of the north east monsoon will remain absent for next seven days, in absence of tropical developement rainfall activities in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka is likely to localised and based on local factors till 3 December.

'What Chinese army couldn't do, done by demonetisation, flawed GST': Rahul Gandhi's attack on PM Modi

Indore: On Sunday, the sixth day of its Madhya Pradesh leg, the Bharat Jodo Yatra, which is led by Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, arrived in Indore, the cleanest city in the nation. The city where BJP has a stronghold, has seen Congress lose both mayoral polls since 1995 and Lok Sabha elections since 1984.

Speaking at the Rajwada palace, Gandhi attacked the BJP-led central government by saying, “What the Chinese army couldn’t do to India has been done by demonetisation and a flawed GST.”

According to a report by NDTV, the Wayanad MP reiterated his claim that the twin policies were ‘disastrous’, and hampered the flow of cash to small and medium-sized traders and farmers, who he claims are the main sources of employment in the nation.

He said that the decision resulted in the end of jobs in the nation, adding that until the micro, small, medium enterprises, and farmers are not revived, Indian youth won’t get jobs. He said, “Look a what is happening now, those who have engineering and other professional degrees are driving cabs or delivering food on order.”

Further taking a dig at the saffron party’s funding, Gandhi said that money from the poor’s pockets is rapidly changing hands and reaching the BJP, which is putting it into the pockets of “greedy MLAs to pull down elected governments in states.”

He also claimed that the media is ignoring their pressing public issues, and instead are reporting on celebrities. He stated that journalists are doing it under pressure, and he does not hold any grudges against them. “Take a TV remote and start shuffling through channels, what you’ll see are Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, Yogi Adityanath, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Aishwarya Rai, and Ajay Devgn only. You’ll never get to see the worried faces and blistered hands of our farmers,” he said.

Renowned Urdu poet Rahat Indori’s son Satlaj Indori also joined the yatra. He said that he offered Rahul Gandhi two books dedicated to his late father, including the latter’s autobiography.

Meanwhile, the Bharat Jodo Yatra of the Congress, will cover a distance of 380 km in the Malwa-Nimar region of western Madhya Pradesh in 12 days before reaching Rajasthan on 4 December, according to the schedule announced by the party. The yatra has so far covered Burhanpur, Khandwa, Khargone, and Indore districts in last six days.
